The following morning, Luna and Squeaky arrived early to meet Zoey.
Both seemed unusually serious.
"What's wrong?" Zoey asked as she stepped outside.
Luna exchanged a glance with Squeaky.
"We want to show you something," Luna said.
Zoey immediately sensed that this wasn't another sightseeing trip.
The three friends traveled beyond the busy streets of the Cloud Kingdom and followed a winding path that led toward the kingdom's outer edge.
As they walked, Zoey noticed the scenery beginning to change.
The cheerful songs of the breeze birds became quieter.
The bright colors of the flowers seemed less vibrant.
Even the warm sunlight appeared slightly dimmer.
Eventually they arrived at an enormous gate woven from silver clouds and flowering vines.
"This is the entrance to the Cloud Gardens," Luna explained.
Zoey's eyes widened.
The gardens stretched farther than she could see.
Thousands upon thousands of cloud flowers bloomed across rolling fields of soft white clouds.
Some flowers glowed with golden light.
Others sparkled with shades of blue, pink, and violet.
Rainbow butterflies drifted lazily through the air.
"It’s beautiful," Zoey whispered.
"It used to be even more beautiful," Squeaky said quietly.
Zoey looked at him.
"What do you mean?"
Instead of answering, Squeaky pointed toward a distant section of the gardens.
Zoey followed his gaze.
Her smile disappeared.
An entire area of flowers had turned gray.
The colorful petals were wilted.
Several cloud trees had lost their glow.
Dark patches spread across the ground like stains.
"What happened?" Zoey asked.
Luna's expression darkened.
"No one knows exactly."
The three continued deeper into the gardens.
The further they walked, the worse the damage became.
Flowers drooped lifelessly.
Rainbow butterflies avoided certain areas completely.
The air itself felt colder.
Zoey couldn't explain it, but something about the place felt wrong.
As they rounded a bend in the path, they spotted a large cloud rabbit sitting beneath a silver tree.
Unlike the other cloud rabbits Zoey had seen, this one looked much older.
Its fur was streaked with silver.
Its eyes carried wisdom and sadness.
The rabbit slowly opened its eyes as they approached.
"So," the rabbit said.
"The dreamer has arrived."
Zoey blinked.
"The dreamer?"
The rabbit nodded.
"We've been expecting you."
Squeaky grinned.
"See? I told you everyone knows about her."
Luna rolled her eyes.
The old rabbit ignored them.
Its attention remained fixed on Zoey.
"My name is Elder Nimbus."
"It's nice to meet you," Zoey replied.
Elder Nimbus slowly stood.
"I wish our meeting could happen under better circumstances."
Zoey looked around at the dying flowers.
"Is this because of the Shadow Cloud?"
The rabbit's ears lowered.
"Yes."
A heavy silence followed.
"The Shadow Cloud's darkness spreads a little further every day."
Elder Nimbus led them deeper into the gardens.
Eventually they reached a clearing unlike any Zoey had seen before.
At the center stood a giant flower.
It towered over everything around it.
Its petals shimmered with every color imaginable.
Light pulsed gently from its center.
"What is that?" Zoey asked.
"The Heart Blossom," Elder Nimbus replied.
"It is the oldest flower in the Cloud Kingdom."
Zoey stared in awe.
"It’s incredible."
"The Heart Blossom helps keep imagination alive throughout the kingdom."
Elder Nimbus's expression grew grim.
"But even it is beginning to weaken."
Zoey looked closer.
For the first time, she noticed dark streaks spreading along several of the petals.
The darkness seemed to crawl like vines.
A chill ran through her.
"If the Heart Blossom dies..." she began.
"The Cloud Kingdom may die with it," Elder Nimbus finished.
The words struck Zoey like a thunderbolt.
Suddenly everything felt much more serious.
This wasn't simply about a few damaged flowers.
The entire kingdom was in danger.
The breeze grew colder.
Dark clouds rolled across the distant horizon.
For a brief moment, Zoey thought she saw a pair of glowing eyes watching from within the storm.
Then they vanished.
"Did you see that?" she asked.
Luna nodded nervously.
"We've all seen them."
"The Shadow Cloud watches us."
Elder Nimbus stepped beside the Heart Blossom.
"There is still hope."
Zoey looked at him.
The old rabbit smiled gently.
"A prophecy has existed for generations."
"A prophecy?" Zoey repeated.
Elder Nimbus nodded.
"It speaks of a dreamer from another world."
Luna's eyes widened.
Squeaky nearly fell over.
Zoey stared at the rabbit.
"You mean... me?"
"Perhaps."
The rabbit's gaze shifted toward the sky.
"For generations we have waited."
"For someone whose imagination burns brighter than darkness."
The wind stirred the giant flower's glowing petals.
For a moment, the Heart Blossom shone brighter than before.
Almost as if it recognized her.
Zoey couldn't explain what she felt.
But deep inside, she sensed something changing.
Something awakening.
And for the first time since arriving in the Cloud Kingdom, she began to wonder if there was a reason she had been brought here at all.
Far beyond the kingdom, thunder rumbled.
The Shadow Cloud was coming.
And somehow, Zoey knew their destinies were connected.
