Thunder rumbled softly in the distance as Zoey stood beside the Heart Blossom.
The giant flower glowed with a gentle rainbow light, its enormous petals swaying in the breeze. Yet the dark streaks spreading across several of its petals were impossible to ignore.
The sight filled Zoey with concern.
The Cloud Kingdom suddenly felt much more fragile than it had when she first arrived.
Elder Nimbus sat quietly beneath the Heart Blossom, his silver fur glowing softly in the fading sunlight.
"You said there was a prophecy," Zoey finally said.
The old rabbit nodded.
"There is."
Luna and Squeaky moved closer.
They looked just as curious as Zoey.
For a moment, Elder Nimbus remained silent.
Then he slowly reached beneath his cloak and produced a small crystal orb.
The orb shimmered with swirling clouds trapped inside.
"This has been passed down through generations of guardians," Elder Nimbus explained.
"It contains one of the oldest memories in the Cloud Kingdom."
Zoey watched as he placed the crystal orb on the ground.
Immediately, the air around them began to glow.
Soft clouds gathered above the orb.
Images slowly formed within the mist.
Zoey gasped.
The clouds were showing scenes from the distant past.
Thousands of years earlier, the Cloud Kingdom appeared brighter than ever.
The gardens stretched endlessly.
The castles sparkled.
The cloud people laughed and celebrated beneath skies filled with color.
"It was a golden age," Elder Nimbus said.
"The Cloud Kingdom thrived."
The image shifted.
Dark clouds appeared along the horizon.
A shadow slowly spread across the kingdom.
The laughter vanished.
The skies darkened.
The gardens began to wither.
Then a massive storm cloud emerged from the darkness.
Its eyes glowed with cold hatred.
Its thunderous voice echoed across the clouds.
"The Shadow Cloud," Zoey whispered.
Elder Nimbus nodded.
"He was once a guardian."
Everyone stared.
"What?" Squeaky squeaked.
Luna looked stunned.
"A guardian?"
The old rabbit sighed.
"Long ago, the Shadow Cloud was not evil."
The images changed again.
Zoey saw a majestic cloud spirit watching over the kingdom.
Its power was immense.
Its presence inspired awe.
"He protected the Cloud Kingdom for centuries."
"What happened?" Zoey asked quietly.
"Jealousy."
The word hung heavily in the air.
"The Shadow Cloud grew jealous of the happiness he protected."
The images darkened.
"He began to believe that fear was stronger than hope."
"He believed control was better than freedom."
The beautiful guardian slowly transformed into the terrifying storm spirit Zoey had glimpsed before.
Darkness consumed him.
Lightning crackled through his form.
"He chose power."
The vision faded.
The crystal orb dimmed.
Silence settled over the garden.
Finally, Zoey spoke.
"And the prophecy?"
Elder Nimbus looked toward the Heart Blossom.
"The prophecy appeared shortly after the Shadow Cloud's fall."
He closed his eyes and began to recite ancient words.
"When darkness rises upon silver skies,
And hope begins to fade,
A dreamer born beyond the clouds.
Will answer fate's call.
With courage in their heart
And imagination as their guide,
They shall stand against the storm.
And restore the light."
The wind whispered through the gardens.
Zoey felt goosebumps rise along her arms.
Luna stared at her.
Squeaky stared at her.
Even Elder Nimbus seemed to be studying her carefully.
"You think I'm the dreamer," Zoey said.
"We don't know for certain," Elder Nimbus replied.
"But the signs are difficult to ignore."
"You arrived when the darkness began spreading."
"The Heart Blossom responded to your presence."
"And you possess something the Shadow Cloud fears."
Zoey frowned.
"What?"
The old rabbit smiled gently.
"Imagination."
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then thunder echoed across the horizon.
The ground trembled.
The Heart Blossom flickered.
Its light briefly dimmed.
Everyone turned.
Dark clouds churned above the western edge of the kingdom.
They were closer now.
Much closer.
A bolt of lightning split the sky.
The cloud gardens shook violently.
Several flowers lost their glow.
Fear spread across Luna's face.
"He's getting stronger."
Elder Nimbus slowly rose.
"Then we have less time than I feared."
Zoey stared toward the growing storm.
Only a few days ago she had been lying in a grassy field looking at clouds.
Now an entire magical kingdom depended on her.
The responsibility felt overwhelming.
But as she looked around at Luna, Squeaky, Elder Nimbus, and the beautiful kingdom she had come to love, she knew one thing.
She couldn't walk away.
No matter how frightened she felt.
No matter how powerful the Shadow Cloud might be.
She would fight for the Cloud Kingdom.
The Heart Blossom suddenly glowed brighter.
A single glowing petal drifted into the air.
It floated gently toward Zoey.
When it touched her hand, warmth spread through her entire body.
The petal dissolved into sparkling light.
At that exact moment, a distant roar echoed from within the storm clouds.
The Shadow Cloud had felt it too.
Somewhere beyond the horizon, a battle was beginning.
And Zoey's role in it had only just begun.
