The next morning, Zoey woke to the cheerful songs of the breeze birds outside her cloud room.
Golden sunlight filtered through the cloud walls, filling the room with a warm glow. For a moment, she forgot where she was. Then she remembered.
The Cloud Kingdom.
She jumped out of bed with excitement.
Today she would finally get to explore more of the magical world she had only glimpsed the day before.
As soon as she stepped outside, she found Luna and Squeaky waiting for her.
"Ready?" Luna asked with a smile.
"Ready for what?" Zoey replied.
Squeaky grinned.
"For the grand tour!"
Zoey laughed.
"I've been ready since I woke up."
The three friends set off down a winding cloud pathway that stretched across the sky like a ribbon of white silk.
Their first stop was Rainbow Falls.
Zoey gasped when she saw it.
Water shimmered in every color imaginable as it flowed from a floating cloud mountain high above. Streams of red, blue, gold, purple, and green cascaded into crystal-clear pools below. Tiny rainbows danced through the mist.
"It's beautiful," Zoey whispered.
Cloud children splashed and played in the colorful pools while breeze birds swooped through the spray.
"The colors come from dreams," Luna explained.
"Dreams?" Zoey asked.
Luna nodded.
"The Cloud Kingdom gathers happy dreams from children around the world. Those dreams help keep our kingdom bright and strong."
Zoey stared at the waterfalls with wonder.
The idea that dreams could create something so beautiful amazed her.
After spending time at Rainbow Falls, they continued deeper into the kingdom.
Soon they arrived at an enormous building made entirely of shimmering clouds.
Its towers reached high into the sky, and golden cloud banners fluttered from every corner.
"What is this place?" Zoey asked.
"The Hall of Dreams," Luna replied.
Inside, thousands of glowing cloud books floated through the air.
Each book sparkled with its own unique color.
Zoey carefully reached out and touched one.
Instantly, images appeared before her.
A young boy dreamed of exploring distant planets.
A little girl imagined herself flying beside dragons.
Another child dreamed of discovering a hidden treasure buried beneath the sea.
Zoey's eyes widened.
"These are their dreams?"
"Every dream is recorded here," Luna explained.
"The cloud librarians protect them."
Several elderly cloud people smiled warmly as they organized floating books.
One of them approached Zoey.
"Dreamers are important," he said kindly.
"They help keep imagination alive."
Zoey smiled.
She liked that.
Back on Earth, some people thought she spent too much time daydreaming.
But here, imagination was celebrated.
After leaving the Hall of Dreams, Luna and Squeaky took Zoey somewhere even more incredible.
High above the kingdom floated giant cloud whales.
They drifted gracefully through the sky like living islands.
Each whale moved slowly and peacefully, singing deep songs that echoed through the clouds.
"They're magnificent," Zoey breathed.
Squeaky puffed out his chest proudly.
"I know one of them."
"You do not," Luna said.
"I do too."
The largest whale lowered its head toward the group.
To Zoey's surprise, it made a gentle rumbling sound that almost sounded like laughter.
Squeaky immediately hid behind Zoey.
Luna burst out laughing.
"I thought you knew him."
"I changed my mind."
Even Zoey couldn't stop laughing.
The cloud whale gently nudged her shoulder before continuing on its journey through the sky.
As the afternoon passed, Zoey found herself falling more and more in love with the Cloud Kingdom.
Yet something still felt wrong.
She noticed more wilted flowers.
Several cloud gardens looked less colorful than before.
And more than once she spotted cloud people staring nervously toward the horizon.
Eventually she asked the question.
"Why does everyone keep looking that way?"
Luna's smile faded.
She pointed toward the western edge of the kingdom.
Dark clouds churned in the distance.
Unlike the soft white clouds of the kingdom, these clouds were gray and twisted.
They moved unnaturally.
Almost as if they were alive.
"The Shadow Cloud's influence," Luna said quietly.
Zoey felt a chill.
Even from far away, the darkness felt threatening.
"Has it always been there?"
"No."
"Then why hasn't anyone stopped it?"
Luna hesitated.
"Because nobody knows how."
The answer hung heavily in the air.
For the first time since arriving, Zoey realized how serious the situation truly was.
This wasn't simply a magical adventure.
The Cloud Kingdom was in danger.
As the sun began to set, the three friends sat atop a cloud hill overlooking the kingdom.
Golden light bathed the castles and gardens below.
The view was breathtaking.
Yet beyond the beauty lingered the growing darkness.
Zoey stared toward the horizon.
The Shadow Cloud was out there.
Waiting.
Watching.
Planning.
And deep inside, she had a feeling that her arrival in the Cloud Kingdom was not a coincidence.
Somehow, she was connected to whatever was coming next.
The question was why.
And before long, she intended to find out.
