Chapter 22

Home

Daniel returned to the farmhouse alone.

The sun was setting.

He stood on the porch and looked through the window.

For years, he'd thought of this place as where everything had gone wrong.

Now he understood.

It was where everything had begun.

He entered.

The house was quiet.

He walked through the living room.

His father's photographs were still on the wall.

Daniel stopped at one.

His father.

His mother.

Him.

A family.

He touched the frame.

"I understand now."

The room remained silent.

Daniel smiled.

"I forgive you."

A breeze moved through the house.

The curtains shifted.

For just a moment, Daniel thought he heard his father's voice.

"That's all I ever wanted."

Daniel closed his eyes.

Then the feeling disappeared.

He walked downstairs.

The hidden chamber was empty.

No entity.

No glass container.

No symbols.

Nothing.

Daniel stood there for a moment.

Then he turned to leave.

Something caught his attention.

A small wooden box beneath the stairs.

He pulled it out.

Inside was a photograph.

His father and mother.

They were young.

Happy.

On the back was a handwritten message.

For Daniel, when he's old enough to understand.

Daniel turned it over.

The message continued.

You were never a curse.

Daniel's eyes filled with tears.

You were the reason we fought.

He held the photograph against his chest.

For years, he'd believed his family had been destroyed because of the supernatural.

Now he understood something different.

They had fought because they loved him.

Daniel placed the photograph in his jacket.

Then he walked upstairs.

Outside, Mara waited beside the car.

"You ready?"

Daniel nodded.

He looked at the farmhouse one last time.

"Yeah."

He locked the door.

Then walked toward the car.

Mara smiled.

"Where to?"

Daniel looked toward the open road.

"Anywhere."

He got inside.

The engine started.

The farmhouse disappeared behind them.

Daniel didn't look back.

He didn't need to.

The past was finally where it belonged.

Behind him.

The road stretched ahead.

And somewhere beyond the horizon, another monster was waiting.

Daniel smiled.

"Let's hunt."
