Chapter 1

Chapter 1

Mia

The moon is so full tonight. On nights like tonight, I prefer to run alone. To be perfectly honest, I like to run alone a lot of the time, but as the daughter of the Alpha, I have to make my presence known. I have to be outgoing and social. Yuck! I hate it.

I feel like when I am social, the other wolves just want something from me. Well, except for Jasmine and Ryan. If it wasn’t for the two of them, I would absolutely go insane. I mean, I have duties as the Alpha’s daughter, but I like my freedom. It is not like I am going to be the Alpha someday. That honor will go to my brother, Mario. I am thankful it falls on him and not on me. I like my freedom.

I can’t say it enough. I love having my freedom. I don’t have to get married. I don’t have to find a mate. Those things are important for the future Alpha, but not for the baby sister to the Alpha. I like it that way. Mario will be married in a few months. I am happy for him. His future wife, Melanie, is very sweet. I like her.

I am running with Melanie, Mario, Jasmine, and Ryan tonight. At least I have Jasmine and Ryan with me. Melanie is sweet and very pretty, but she is very …. I want to put this in a nice way, but there really is no way to put it nicely. Melanie has never had a drink in her life. Melanie has never had sex. Melanie is very loyal to my brother. She will probably ask for permission to breathe. I shouldn’t say these things, but it is true.

Jasmine and Ryan run a little ahead of me. I take my time on our nightly runs. Ryan always runs like he has somewhere to be, like dude, calm down, we have the entire night to run and enjoy the moonlight. I love being in the moonlight. I feel so at peace on full moon nights. I don’t feel any pressure from the pack or my father.

There really isn’t much pressure on me, at least not like there is on Mario, but my father does want me to get married. I am not ready. I have not met a wolf yet that I would consider marrying. Maybe I am too picky, and I feel like I should be picky about the wolf I spend the rest of my life with and have a family with.

We run down to the creek. Ryan stops and waits for Jasmine and me to get there. Mario and Melanie are way behind us. Mario is a much faster runner than any of us, but he holds back to stay with Melanie, who is the slowest wolf I have ever seen in my life. A turtle could run faster than Melanie. I don’t know what he sees in her. I shouldn’t say that.

“You two should pick up your speed,” Ryan said. He looked at his reflection in the water. Ryan is a pretty boy. I have no idea how Jasmine puts up with him, but they are crazy about one another. Sometimes I think that is something I would want, but then I remember the obedient part of being married, and I change my mind. I like my freedom.

“Maybe I like the view,” Jasmine teases Ryan.

“Sure, that is it,” Ryan said.

I roll my eyes at both of them. My brother and Melanie finally make it to the water. It won’t be long and he will have to run with the pack and not his little sister. My father runs with the pack every night now. He is planning to step down from Alpha as soon as Mario marries Melanie.

I think Melanie will make a great Luna. I think my brother will be a great Alpha. I can tell the two of them are crazy over one another. It is going to be a huge wedding. There are at least five other packs coming, and of course the vampires are coming. We have a good relationship with the vampires in the area. My father fought hard for it.

Rayne is over the vampires. She is beautiful. Her hair is long and red. She is tiny, but I have seen her put a full-grown wolf on the ground. She is not to be messed with at all. She has always been kind to me.

Rayne has a brother, Zion. He is hot. Everyone wants to mate with him, but he is kind of like me, not interested in getting in a big hurry to marry anyone. We have talked a few times, but nothing serious. I consider him a friend.

We continue our run until we get back to the pack house. I don’t live in the pack house. I live in a small house next to the pack house. It gives me my privacy. Wolves can be rowdy and gross sometimes.

“Party with us tonight,” Jasmine said. She is pushing for me to go with her and Ryan, but I would rather read a book and sleep.

“You know I would rather sleep than party,” I said. I meant every word of it. Why would I want to go out? I don’t drink or party. I am as dull as Melanie. Maybe not that dull. At least I am not obedient to a wolf. I am my own person and lead my own life.

“It is a vampire party. You should come with us. I hear Zion is going to be there,” Jasmine teases me.

The thought of seeing Zion makes me almost want to go out with them. “Ugh, fine, I will go, but I am not staying out late,” I said.

“Of course not, we will get you home early,” Jasmine said. She looks over at Ryan, and I already know I will not be home early. Why did I say yes? I know, because I wanted to see Zion.
