Tommy stood frozen beneath the ancient oak tree, staring at Luna as though the world had suddenly stopped making sense. Although a part of him knew he had just heard her speak, another part stubbornly refused to believe it, insisting that there had to be some other explanation for the words that had reached his ears.
The fox remained seated beside the tree, her amber eyes calm and patient as she watched the stunned expressions spread across the faces of the three friends. Unlike Tommy and Lily, who looked as though they had forgotten how to breathe, Leo appeared to be wrestling with the possibility that he had finally lost his mind.
"No," Leo said firmly, shaking his head. "Nope. Absolutely not."
Spark drifted through the air with a grin.
"That's usually how most people react."
"You talked," Tommy finally managed.
Luna tilted her head slightly.
"That is generally how conversations work."
Spark burst into laughter so hard that he nearly fell out of the air.
Tommy couldn't help laughing despite his confusion.
The simple reaction made Luna seem less frightening and far more real than she had a few moments ago.
"What are you?" Lily asked quietly.
The fox's expression softened.
"That is a much more complicated question than you might think."
The clearing fell silent once more.
Above them, sunlight filtered through the branches of the enormous oak tree, casting shifting patterns of gold across the ground. The air seemed different here than it had anywhere else in the forest. Everything felt sharper somehow, as though the colors were brighter and every sound carried greater meaning.
Tommy glanced around.
The glowing flowers.
The floating lights.
The whispering voices drifting through the trees.
None of it felt ordinary.
Yet strangely enough, none of it felt dangerous either.
It felt like stepping into a story that had been waiting for him long before he arrived.
Luna rose gracefully to her feet and turned toward the great oak tree.
"The forest has been watching you for some time, Tommy."
Tommy's stomach tightened.
"What does that mean?"
Before Luna could answer, the ground beneath them trembled ever so slightly.
The movement was so small that Tommy might have imagined it, yet the reaction from Luna told a different story.
Her ears immediately stood upright.
Spark's playful smile vanished.
Even the whispers seemed to quiet.
For the first time since arriving in the clearing, Tommy sensed genuine concern in the air.
Luna stared toward the deeper parts of the forest.
Something had changed.
"What is it?" Lily asked.
Luna didn't answer immediately.
Instead, she continued listening to something none of the others could hear.
Finally, she spoke.
"Trouble."
The single word sent a chill through Tommy.
Spark drifted lower.
"That's not supposed to happen yet."
Tommy frowned.
"What isn't supposed to happen?"
The tiny creature exchanged a nervous glance with Luna.
Neither seemed eager to answer.
And that frightened Tommy more than if they had simply told him the truth.
Far beyond the clearing, somewhere deep within the ancient forest, a low rumble echoed through the trees.
The sound was distant.
But it was growing closer.
And whatever had just awakened in the Whispering Woods was the reason Luna had brought Tommy there.
Whether he was ready or not, his adventure had truly begun.
