Chapter 3

Spark

Tommy had imagined many strange things hiding within the Whispering Woods over the years, but a talking fox and a glowing creature named Spark had never been among them. As he stood in the clearing beneath the ancient oak tree, listening to the distant rumble echo through the forest, he found himself wondering whether he had somehow fallen asleep beneath the meadow oak and begun dreaming.

Unfortunately, the worried expressions on Luna and Spark's faces suggested otherwise.

The rumble came again.

This time it lasted longer.

Leaves trembled high above them, and several birds suddenly burst from the treetops, disappearing into the distant sky.

Tommy exchanged nervous glances with Lily and Leo.

"I don't suppose that's normal?" he asked.

"No," Spark replied immediately. "Very not normal."

The tiny creature hovered lower to the ground, and for the first time Tommy noticed that Spark's usual confidence seemed forced. Although the winged being continued smiling, there was tension behind it now.

Luna remained focused on the forest beyond the clearing.

"The darkness is moving sooner than expected."

Tommy frowned.

"The darkness?"

The fox seemed to realize she had said too much.

For a moment she considered avoiding the question.

Then she sighed.

"You deserve some answers."

"That would be nice," Leo said.

Luna turned toward the great oak tree.

For several seconds she remained silent.

When she finally spoke, her voice carried a seriousness that immediately captured everyone's attention.

"Long before Willow Creek existed, before roads crossed these lands and before villages were built along the river, the Whispering Woods were protected by powerful guardians. Their purpose was simple. They maintained the balance between the natural world and the magic that flows through it."

Tommy listened carefully.

The explanation sounded impossible.

Yet after everything he had already seen, impossible was becoming surprisingly normal.

"You're one of those guardians?" Lily asked.

Luna nodded.

"My family has served the forest for generations."

Tommy stared.

"So you're not actually a fox?"

Spark immediately laughed.

"Oh, she's definitely a fox."

Luna shot him a look.

"What Spark means is that I am more than an ordinary fox."

"Much more," Spark added.

The tiny creature zipped through the air before landing on a nearby branch.

"As for me, I'm a sprite."

"A what?" Leo asked.

"A sprite."

Spark puffed out his chest proudly.

"Forest sprites are keepers of stories, guardians of forgotten paths, collectors of secrets, and occasional heroes."

Tommy raised an eyebrow.

"Occasional?"

"Mostly occasional."

The clearing filled with laughter.

For a moment, the tension eased.

Then the rumble returned.

Stronger this time.

The laughter vanished.

Tommy noticed something strange.

The whispers surrounding the clearing had grown quieter.

Much quieter.

Almost frightened.

The realization sent a chill through him.

Even the forest seemed afraid.

Luna noticed it too.

"The woods are warning us."

Tommy's curiosity overcame his fear.

"Warning us about what?"

The fox hesitated.

Then she looked directly at him.

"Something has begun waking beneath the forest."

The words settled heavily over the clearing.

Tommy felt his stomach tighten.

"What kind of something?"

Luna's expression darkened.

"The kind that should have remained asleep."

A silence followed.

No one seemed eager to speak.

Even Spark had lost his playful attitude.

Tommy suddenly realized something important.

Luna had brought him here for a reason.

Not Lily.

Not Leo.

Him.

The thought had been bothering him ever since arriving.

Now he finally asked.

"Why me?"

Luna's ears twitched slightly.

The question clearly wasn't unexpected.

"The forest chose you."

Tommy blinked.

"What does that even mean?"

Spark floated closer.

"It means the woods have been whispering your name for weeks."

Tommy stared.

"My name?"

Luna nodded.

"The first time we heard it, we thought we were mistaken."

"The second time, we were concerned," Spark said.

"The third time, we knew something important was happening."

Tommy had no idea how to respond.

The forest had been whispering his name?

That sounded completely ridiculous.

And yet, standing in a magical clearing beside a talking fox and a flying sprite, it no longer seemed like the strangest thing he had heard that day.

Suddenly a loud crack echoed somewhere beyond the trees.

Everyone jumped.

The sound had come from deeper within the woods.

Branches shook violently in the distance.

Then came another sound.

A growl.

Low.

Deep.

Wrong.

Tommy couldn't explain it.

The growl didn't sound like it belonged to any animal he had ever heard.

Instead, it seemed to vibrate through the ground itself.

Luna immediately stepped in front of the children.

Spark's wings began glowing brighter.

For the first time, Tommy saw genuine fear in both of them.

Whatever was making that sound was dangerous.

Very dangerous.

The growl came again.

Closer now.

Much closer.

Then silence.

An uncomfortable silence.

The kind that makes the world feel as though it's holding its breath.

Luna lowered her voice.

"We have to leave."

"What about the forest?" Tommy asked.

"We help it by surviving."

The fox turned toward a narrow trail hidden behind the enormous oak tree.

Tommy hadn't even noticed it before.

"The Guardian Owl will know what to do."

"The Guardian Owl?" Lily asked.

Luna nodded.

"He watches over the oldest parts of the woods."

Spark suddenly looked excited.

"He's also incredibly grumpy."

Luna sighed.

"That too."

Despite everything, Tommy smiled.

The moment only lasted a second.

Then another growl rolled through the forest.

Much closer than before.

The smile disappeared.

Luna began moving toward the hidden trail.

"Stay close."

No one argued.

As Tommy followed Luna deeper into the Whispering Woods, he couldn't shake the feeling that his life had changed forever.

Somewhere behind them, hidden among the shadows and ancient trees, something had awakened.

And whatever it was, it was coming.
