Each step closer changes the smell.
First—
Damp earth.
Then—
Metal.
Then—
Something unmistakable.
Rot.
Death.
Kyle reflexively covers his nose.
MAGGIE follows suit, but her eyes never stop moving.
MAGGIE (she coughs through words):
“That’s not animals.”
Kyle nods.
They pass the DRY TUNNEL.
Distorted sound bounces around.
Normal.
Almost comforting.
They stop at the WET TUNNEL.
Water echoes softly inside.
The smell is strongest here.
Thick.
Layered.
Old.
Kyle hesitates at the threshold.
MAGGIE notices.
MAGGIE:
“You don’t have to go in.”
KYLE:
“I’m not going in.”
He gestures.
KYLE:
“This is where it jumped me.”
Maggie studies the entrance.
The darkness inside doesn’t behave like shadows.
It absorbs light.
MAGGIE (stern, controlled):
“We're not stepping inside.
Not today.”
Maggie kneels.
Touches the concrete near the entrance.
Her fingers brush something slimy.
She brings them up.
Sniffs.
Her expression hardens.
MAGGIE:
“Yeah, this isn’t fresh.”
Kyle’s breathing tightens.
Maggie wades through the murky water to get a closer look.
She steps through the rank tunnel opening. She looks at her watch. Midnight. Impossible.
Maggie backs out of the tunnel. 8:17 AM.
Sticks her arm back through the opening. Midnight again. Back out… 8:18 AM.
Maggie shakes her head in disbelief. She wades back through the murky water, making her way back to Kyle.
A low sound drifts from deep inside the tunnel—
Not a howl.
Not a voice.
Just… movement.
Maggie stands.
Slowly.
MAGGIE:
“Kyle.”
She keeps her eyes on the tunnel.
MAGGIE:
“We’re leaving.”
Kyle nods immediately.
They back away.
Neither turns their back.
The darkness does not move.
But it feels like it’s watching.
They retreat toward the fence.
The smell lingers long after they should be clear of it.
Kyle glances back.
For just a second—
He thinks he sees something shift.
Like smoke.
But when he blinks—
Nothing.
They disappear back into the darkness.
The tunnels remain.
Silent.
Waiting.
AUNT MAGGIE inhales again, controlled, analytical.
MAGGIE (low, thinking out loud):
“One tunnel smells… floral.
Faint. Almost sweet.
The other—
(shakes her head)
Death in the water.”
Kyle looks at her, confused and frightened.
MAGGIE:
“I don’t like this. I don’t have equipment, and—
(pauses)
There could be radiation.
We’re not equipped for this.”
She turns, already deciding.
MAGGIE:
“We'll come back. I’ll call a team.”
A sound echoes from deep inside the tunnel—
A SHRIEK.
High. Distorted.
Loud. Close.
Kyle and Maggie spin instantly.
Maggie’s SERVICE PISTOL is already out—
So fast Kyle barely registers it.
She trains it on the tunnel mouths.
KYLE (terrified):
“That—
That’s it.”
MAGGIE:
“What the hell was that?”
KYLE:
“That’s what I was trying to tell you!”
Kyle grabs her sleeve, tugging hard.
KYLE:
“Aunt Maggie, we have to go—
Now!”
Another faint sound ripples through the tunnel system.
Not necessarily louder.
Just closer.
MAGGIE backs away, gun raised, never turning her back.
Kyle pulls harder now, panic breaking through.
They reach the fence.
Over.
Scrambling.
The second their feet hit the other side—
MAGGIE breaks.
She RUNS.
Dragging Kyle through the thicket at full speed.
Branches whip past.
Kyle stumbles.
MAGGIE:
“Don’t stop—!”
Her grip slips.
Kyle FALLS hard.
He screams as his injured arm takes the weight.
Pain explodes up his forearm. His bandage unwrapping, exposing his scar.
MAGGIE spins back, reaching for him—
KYLE (gritting teeth):
“Wait— wait!”
He's trying to re-seal the velcro.
She grabs his shirt, hauling—
Kyle’s eyes lock onto something in the grass.
A faint GLINT.
Metal.
Jewelry.
KYLE:
“Wait—!”
He drops to his knees, hands shaking.
Reaches.
Pulls free—
LOLITA’S ANKLET.
Dirt-stained.
Bent.
But unmistakable.
Kyle holds it up, breath hitching.
KYLE:
“I bought this for her…
Valentine’s Day.
Two weeks ago.”
Maggie’s face drains of color.
Another SHRIEK.
Closer.
Different.
Lower.
The ground feels like it vibrates beneath them.
MAGGIE:
“Kyle—!”
Kyle clutches the anklet to his chest.
The brush behind them shifts.
Something large moves without being seen.
MAGGIE grabs Kyle and hauls him up.
MAGGIE:
“Run— Now!”
They bolt.
Behind them—
A HOWLER pops out of one of the tunnels. It pulses briefly into existence between the trees—
Solid. Massive.
Claws flexing.
Then—
Gone.
Heading straight for them.
