Chapter 14

SHE DOESN'T LIKE IT HERE

The sun is fully up now. That somehow makes everything worse.

AUNT MAGGIE and KYLE push through a thickpatch of overgrown grass behind the apartments. The weeds are waist-high.

Unkempt. Forgotten.

MAGGIE scans instinctively—

Not like a cop.

Like a soldier.

KYLE:

“They should’ve cut this down years ago.”

MAGGIE:

“When money runs thin…

so does attention.”

She doesn’t like it here.

She patched Kyle’s arm back at the apartment—efficient, practiced— But whatever caused that wound didn’t make sense.

And Maggie hates not understanding a threat.

They reach the CHAIN LINK FENCE separating the apartments from the ravine.

Maggie stops.

Listens.

Nothing obvious.

Still—

Her unease deepens.

MAGGIE (low):

“You’re sure this is where it happened?”

Kyle nods.

Doesn’t look confident.

They climb the fence.

[EXT. SMALL LOT / RAVINE EDGE – CONTINUOUS]

The terrain opens slightly.

Ahead—

THE TUNNELS.

Two massive concrete openings cut into the earth.

Like mouths.

Yawning.

Big enough to swallow trucks.

A CONCRETE DIVIDER runs between them from ceiling to ground.

One tunnel has a steady trickle of WATER spilling out.

The other—

Dry.

Too still.

Off somehow..

1000000445

Maggie and Kyle stop at the fence line.

Scanning everywhere at once.

The air feels heavier here.

MAGGIE (quiet):

“Jesus…”

Kyle swallows.

They exchange a look.

Neither says it.

But both feel it.

They climb the second fence.
