Chapter 3

The Void King's Return

The stone door exploded inward with enough force to shake the entire mountain.

Ancient fragments of rock flew across the chamber like shrapnel as a wave of darkness erupted from the opening beyond. The impact knocked Mason and Tyler backward while blue and black energy collided in the center of the room.

For a brief moment, neither teenager could see anything.

The chamber vanished beneath a storm of swirling light and shadow.

Then the darkness began to take shape.

Mason slowly lifted his head.

His breath caught.

A figure stood within the shattered doorway.

Tall.

Thin.

Almost unnaturally thin.

Black armor covered its body from head to toe. Crimson cracks glowed beneath the surface like molten lava trapped beneath obsidian stone. A long cape made entirely of living shadows drifted behind it without any wind.

But the eyes were the worst part.

Two burning red eyes stared out from beneath a dark hood.

Ancient.

Cold.

Merciless.

The figure smiled.

The temperature inside the chamber dropped instantly.

Frost spread across the walls.

Ice formed along the broken crystal fragments scattered across the floor.

Even breathing suddenly felt difficult.

Atlas stepped forward.

Blue energy exploded around him.

The light pushed back against the darkness flooding from the doorway.

For the first time, the two ancient enemies stood face to face.

The hero.

And the monster.

The Void King tilted his head.

The smile widened.

"Atlas."

The voice sounded wrong.

Like multiple voices speaking at once.

Some deep.

Some high.

Some human.

Some not.

The sound echoed through the chamber long after he finished speaking.

Atlas's jaw tightened.

"You're supposed to be dead."

The Void King laughed.

The noise rolled through the mountain.

"So are you."

Mason looked between them.

The hatred was obvious.

The moment they saw each other, the atmosphere had changed.

This wasn't simply a battle between enemies.

This was personal.

Very personal.

Thousands of years of hatred hung in the air between them.

The Void King slowly stepped from the doorway.

Darkness followed him.

The shadows beneath his feet spread outward like black water, consuming everything they touched.

Ancient symbols on the floor cracked and died.

The glowing runes faded.

The darkness was literally devouring the light.

Tyler grabbed Mason's arm.

"We need to leave."

For once, Mason completely agreed.

Neither of them belonged here.

They weren't heroes.

They weren't warriors.

They were high school students.

Yet before they could move, the Void King's gaze shifted.

His crimson eyes locked onto them.

The smile disappeared.

For the first time, genuine curiosity appeared on his face.

"Children."

Atlas immediately stepped between them.

The protective movement happened instantly.

Without hesitation.

Without thought.

The Void King's eyes narrowed.

"A thousand years imprisoned."

His voice echoed through the chamber.

"And you still protect them."

Atlas's response came immediately.

"I always will."

The Void King laughed again.

"That is why you failed."

Dark energy erupted from his body.

The chamber shook violently.

Massive cracks spread across the ceiling.

Stone pillars shattered.

The mountain groaned.

The Void King raised one hand.

The shadows obeyed.

They rose from the floor like living creatures and surged toward Atlas.

The hero reacted instantly.

Blue energy exploded from his armor.

The two forces collided in the center of the chamber.

The impact sounded like thunder.

Light and darkness crashed together.

The shockwave knocked Mason and Tyler off their feet.

The battle had begun.

And it was unlike anything either of them had ever imagined.

Atlas launched forward.

The stone floor cracked beneath him.

One second he stood across the chamber.

The next he reached the Void King.

His fist struck with enough force to shatter solid rock.

The impact launched the villain through three stone pillars.

The entire mountain shook.

Tyler stared.

"Oh my God."

The Void King emerged from the rubble completely unharmed.

His smile returned.

"Better."

Dark tendrils shot from his hands.

Atlas dodged.

The shadows sliced through stone as though it were paper.

Entire sections of the chamber collapsed.

The battle moved faster than Mason's eyes could follow.

Explosions of blue and black energy filled the cavern.

Every collision shook the mountain.

Neither combatant appeared human.

They looked like gods fighting.

Ancient beings locked in a war older than recorded history.

Then something changed.

Atlas glanced toward Mason.

Only for a moment.

Only for a second.

But it was enough.

The Void King saw the movement.

The villain smiled.

"You care about them."

Atlas's expression darkened.

The realization terrified Mason.

Because suddenly he understood.

The Void King wasn't interested in winning.

Not yet.

He was looking for leverage.

The villain's crimson eyes settled on Mason.

Then Tyler.

Then back to Mason.

"Interesting."

Before anyone could react, darkness exploded from the floor beneath Mason's feet.

A massive shadow claw erupted upward.

Mason barely managed to dive aside.

The claw smashed into the stone wall behind him.

Rock exploded.

Dust filled the air.

The Void King laughed.

Atlas roared.

The sound echoed through the entire mountain.

Blue energy erupted around the hero.

The chamber brightened like a miniature sun.

For the first time, the Void King's smile faded.

Atlas slammed into him.

The impact blew both ancient beings through the far wall.

Stone exploded outward.

The mountain shook violently.

The ceiling began collapsing.

Large chunks of rock crashed downward.

Tyler grabbed Mason.

"We are leaving!"

This time Mason didn't argue.

The two teenagers sprinted toward the tunnel leading back to the surface.

Behind them, the battle continued.

Roars echoed through the mountain.

Explosions of blue and black light illuminated the darkness.

The fight seemed to be tearing Blackstone Mountain apart.

They were halfway to the entrance when a voice echoed through Mason's mind.

Not his ears.

His mind.

Clear.

Powerful.

Ancient.

Mason.

He froze.

Tyler nearly ran into him.

"What are you doing?"

Mason looked around.

Nobody stood nearby.

Yet he heard it again.

Mason. Run.

Atlas.

The voice belonged to Atlas.

The realization stunned him.

The hero was somehow communicating with him.

Then came a second message.

One that made his blood run cold.

He knows who you are now.

Mason's heart stopped.

What did that mean?

Before he could ask, another explosion shook the mountain.

The tunnel behind them partially collapsed.

Dust and stone filled the air.

The mountain was dying.

The voice returned one final time.

Urgent.

Desperate.

Get to Ash Hollow. Protect the Key.

The connection vanished.

Mason stared.

The Key?

What key?

Tyler grabbed him again.

"Mason!"

The teenager finally snapped back to reality.

Together they sprinted toward the surface.

Moments later they burst from the cave entrance just as a massive explosion erupted behind them.

Blue light shot into the night sky.

The mountainside collapsed inward.

The entrance vanished beneath tons of rock.

Silence followed.

Mason stood there gasping for breath.

The storm clouds above Blackstone Mountain churned violently.

Lightning flashed.

Thunder rolled across the valley.

And somewhere beneath the mountain, Atlas was fighting alone.

But that wasn't what frightened Mason most.

It was the final message.

Because deep down he knew something terrible.

The Void King wasn't coming for Atlas.

He was coming for him.
