Chapter 5

The Darkness in the Hallway

The darkness swallowed the school in an instant.

One moment the hallways of Ash Hollow High School buzzed with students rushing toward buses and after-school activities. The next, every light vanished simultaneously, plunging hundreds of people into complete darkness.

Screams erupted immediately.

Lockers slammed.

Footsteps echoed through the halls.

Teachers shouted for students to remain calm.

Nobody listened.

Panic spread like wildfire.

Mason's heart hammered against his ribs as he stood frozen beside Dr. Evelyn Cross.

The darkness felt wrong.

Not normal.

Not the result of a power outage.

The shadows seemed alive.

Moving.

Breathing.

Watching.

A cold chill swept through the hallway.

The temperature dropped so quickly that Mason could see his breath.

Around him, students began noticing.

"What is happening?"

"Why is it so cold?"

"Someone turn the lights back on!"

The confusion only grew.

Then the voice returned.

Deep.

Ancient.

Impossible.

It echoed through every hallway in the building.

Every classroom.

Every stairwell.

Every corner.

"Atlas..."

The name rolled through the school like thunder.

Students looked around nervously.

Many assumed it was a prank.

A recording.

Something explainable.

Mason knew better.

His stomach twisted.

The Void King was here.

Not physically.

At least he hoped not.

But somehow the ancient villain had reached the school.

And he was looking for something.

Or someone.

Dr. Cross grabbed Mason's arm.

"We need to move."

Her voice was urgent.

Fearful.

Mason didn't argue.

"What is happening?"

"The Void King is searching."

The answer did nothing to calm him.

"Searching for what?"

Dr. Cross looked directly at him.

"You."

A loud crash echoed somewhere down the hallway.

Students screamed.

The shadows along the walls suddenly stretched unnaturally.

Growing longer.

Darker.

Like ink spreading across paper.

Mason felt a knot form in his stomach.

The darkness wasn't random.

It was moving.

Toward him.

Dr. Cross pulled him forward.

"Run."

They took off immediately.

The hallway had become chaos.

Students rushed in every direction.

Teachers attempted to restore order.

Nobody succeeded.

Fear had taken over.

Mason followed Dr. Cross toward a nearby stairwell.

Tyler appeared from the darkness and nearly collided with them.

"There you are!"

Mason grabbed him.

"No time."

Tyler frowned.

"For what?"

Another crash echoed through the building.

This one much closer.

The three exchanged a look.

Then they heard it.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Heavy.

Approaching from somewhere down the hallway.

The sound immediately silenced everyone nearby.

Students stopped moving.

Teachers stopped shouting.

The footsteps continued.

Steady.

Deliberate.

Each step seemed to shake the floor.

Nobody could see who—or what—was approaching.

The hallway remained pitch black.

Then something appeared.

Two crimson eyes.

Glowing within the darkness.

Gasps erupted around them.

Several students screamed.

The eyes floated at the far end of the hallway.

Watching.

Waiting.

The sight instantly reminded Mason of the Void King.

The eyes blinked.

Then vanished.

The footsteps stopped.

Silence followed.

Complete silence.

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Then every light in the school exploded back to life.

Students shielded their eyes.

Teachers stared.

The hallway looked completely normal.

The shadows were gone.

The eyes were gone.

The cold vanished.

Everything appeared ordinary.

Except for one thing.

A message.

Burned directly into the wall at the end of the corridor.

The letters stretched from floor to ceiling.

Black as coal.

Freshly carved.

Students immediately backed away.

Teachers looked horrified.

Mason felt his pulse quicken.

Because he already knew who had left it.

The message contained only four words.

THE KEY BELONGS TO ME

The hallway fell silent.

Dr. Cross looked pale.

Tyler looked confused.

Mason looked terrified.

Because now he understood something.

The Void King wasn't searching for Atlas.

He wasn't attacking the town.

He wasn't trying to hide.

He wanted the Key.

And somehow he believed Mason knew where it was.

The problem was that Mason had absolutely no idea what the Key even was.

Thirty minutes later, the school had been evacuated.

Police surrounded the building.

Parents flooded the parking lot.

News vans arrived.

The story was already spreading.

Another unexplained message.

Another mysterious event.

Nobody had answers.

Dr. Cross led Mason and Tyler away from the crowd.

They stopped near her black SUV parked beneath a row of trees.

The archaeologist looked unusually tense.

"We don't have much time."

Tyler folded his arms.

"Can someone finally explain what's happening?"

Dr. Cross took a deep breath.

Then nodded.

"Fair enough."

She opened her satchel and removed an old leather journal.

The cover looked ancient.

The pages appeared yellowed with age.

"What is that?" Mason asked.

"A record."

She carefully opened it.

"One of the few surviving accounts from Atlas's era."

Both boys leaned closer.

The pages contained drawings.

Maps.

Ancient symbols.

Then Mason saw something familiar.

The symbol from the mountain.

The same one carved beneath the message at school.

Dr. Cross pointed toward it.

"This is known as the Seal of Atlas."

Tyler frowned.

"Okay."

"The seal protected something."

Mason's pulse quickened.

"The Key."

Dr. Cross nodded.

"The Celestial Key."

Neither boy spoke.

The name sounded important.

Dangerous.

Ancient.

"What does it do?" Mason asked.

The archaeologist looked uncomfortable.

For several moments she remained silent.

Then she answered.

"It opens a gateway."

A chill ran through him.

"A gateway to where?"

Dr. Cross slowly closed the journal.

Her expression darkened.

"Nobody knows."

The answer somehow felt worse.

Tyler stared.

"That's helpful."

"The records are incomplete."

Dr. Cross looked toward Blackstone Mountain in the distance.

"Atlas hid the Key before the final war."

Another pause.

"The Void King spent years searching for it."

Mason felt his stomach tighten.

"And now he's searching again."

"Yes."

The archaeologist's answer came immediately.

The realization settled over the group.

The Void King wasn't trying to conquer the world.

Not yet.

He wanted the Key first.

Whatever it was.

Whatever it opened.

It mattered enough for an immortal villain to risk everything.

Then Mason remembered something.

The voice.

Atlas's warning.

Protect the Key.

His pulse quickened.

"What if Atlas knows where it is?"

Dr. Cross looked surprised.

"He probably does."

Tyler frowned.

"Then we just ask him."

Silence followed.

Nobody wanted to point out the obvious problem.

Atlas was still trapped beneath a collapsing mountain fighting an ancient evil.

Asking him questions wasn't exactly an option.

A distant rumble interrupted the conversation.

Everyone turned toward Blackstone Mountain.

Dark clouds swirled above the peak.

Lightning flashed.

Then a brilliant streak of blue energy shot into the sky.

The beam remained visible for several seconds before fading.

Mason's heart leapt.

Atlas.

The hero was still alive.

But something else appeared immediately afterward.

A massive wave of black energy erupted from the mountain.

The sky darkened.

Birds exploded from the trees.

The earth trembled.

Dr. Cross's face went completely white.

"No."

"What?" Mason asked.

The archaeologist stared toward the mountain.

Fear filled her eyes.

"The barrier."

A knot formed in Mason's stomach.

"What barrier?"

Dr. Cross swallowed.

"The one keeping the others imprisoned."

The world suddenly felt very quiet.

"The others?"

The archaeologist slowly looked at him.

And for the first time since meeting her, she seemed genuinely terrified.

"The Void King wasn't the only ancient enemy Atlas defeated."

The realization hit like a truck.

There were more.

Many more.

And whatever had just happened on Blackstone Mountain had changed everything.
