Chapter 17

What Chronic Illness Taught Me

Chronic illness taught me that strength is not always visible.

Sometimes strength looks like getting out of bed.

Sometimes strength looks like showing up when everything hurts.

Sometimes strength looks like simply refusing to quit.

Chronic illness taught me patience.

Healing takes time.

Recovery takes time.

Growth takes time.

And sometimes God's timing is different from our own.

Chronic illness taught me compassion.

You never know what someone else is carrying.

The people who appear strongest are often fighting battles you cannot see.

Chronic illness taught me gratitude.

I learned to appreciate ordinary days.

Simple moments.

Quiet blessings.

The things I once overlooked became precious.

Chronic illness taught me faith.

Not the kind of faith that exists when life is easy.

The kind that survives uncertainty.

The kind that survives fear.

The kind that survives storms.

The kind that survives diagnoses, surgeries, setbacks, and long seasons of waiting.

Most importantly, chronic illness taught me that my story is bigger than my diagnosis.

I am not Multiple Sclerosis.

I am not Lupus.

I am not a heart attack.

I am not brain aneurysms.

I am not my pain.

I am not my limitations.

I am a child of God.

I am a survivor.

I am a woman of faith.

I am a woman with purpose.

And by the grace of God—

I am still here.
