Chapter 4

The World of Ashes

The Void King smiled.

Far beyond the Crossroads, hidden within a realm where stars no longer existed, the ancient villain stood at the edge of a corrupted pathway and stared into the darkness.

Something had changed.

He could feel it.

The Gatekeeper had finally begun awakening.

The realization pleased him.

For weeks, he had watched from afar.

Observed.

Waited.

Allowed the boy time to settle into his new role.

Most would assume patience wasn't one of the Void King's strengths.

They would be wrong.

Patience was how kingdoms fell.

Patience was how wars were won.

And patience was how he planned to claim the Gate.

The ancient villain slowly extended his hand.

Dark energy swirled around his fingers.

The corrupted pathway before him expanded.

Another world appeared within its depths.

A dying world.

A broken world.

A world he had conquered centuries ago.

The Void King stepped through.

The sky burned.

Black clouds covered the heavens while crimson lightning streaked between them. Mountains stood broken in the distance. Oceans had long since evaporated.

Nothing lived here anymore.

Nothing except shadows.

The world had once been beautiful.

Now it was little more than a graveyard.

The Void King walked through the ruins of a shattered city.

Towering buildings lay collapsed.

Ancient statues had been destroyed.

The streets remained empty.

Silent.

Dead.

Yet something still waited here.

Something powerful.

The villain stopped before a massive crater stretching for miles.

At the center stood a prison.

Unlike the prisons Atlas had built.

This prison had been created by the Void itself.

Dark stone covered its surface.

Ancient chains wrapped around it.

Crimson symbols glowed across every inch.

The structure looked less like a prison and more like a warning.

The Void King smiled.

"Wake up."

Silence.

Then the prison trembled.

The chains rattled.

Cracks appeared.

A deep growl echoed from within.

The sound shook the entire world.

The smile widened.

Another ally would soon join him.

Another piece of the coming war.

And this one was far more dangerous than Malakar.

Meanwhile...

The Crossroads.

Mason lay flat on his back in the training arena.

Again.

The floating platform beneath him slowly drifted through the air while stars filled the endless sky above.

He groaned.

"I hate training."

Aurelian sat nearby.

The old Gatekeeper looked far too amused.

"Atlas said the exact same thing."

Mason rubbed the back of his head.

"Did he also get thrown through walls?"

The ancient warrior nodded.

"Frequently."

That made him feel slightly better.

Slightly.

The last several days had been brutal.

Every morning began with sword training.

Every afternoon involved mastering Gatekeeper abilities.

Every evening included lessons on history, worlds, and civilizations connected to the Crossroads.

His schedule made high school seem relaxing.

Which felt deeply unfair.

Aurelian stood.

"We're done for today."

Mason blinked.

"Really?"

The old Gatekeeper smiled.

"You sound surprised."

"Usually you make me suffer longer."

The ancient warrior laughed.

Then his expression grew serious.

"Tomorrow we're leaving."

The words immediately got Mason's attention.

"What?"

Aurelian pointed toward a nearby projection.

Several pathways appeared.

One flashed red.

A warning symbol glowed above it.

"The Void attacked another world."

Silence.

The reality hit hard.

Another world.

Another civilization.

More people.

More lives.

The war wasn't waiting for him to finish training.

The war was already happening.

Aurelian crossed his arms.

"You need experience."

The old Gatekeeper looked directly at him.

"Real experience."

A knot formed in Mason's stomach.

"What kind of experience?"

The answer came immediately.

"The dangerous kind."

Earth.

The Sanctuary.

Tyler stared at the glowing image floating above the crystal table.

Mason's face appeared within the projection.

The image flickered occasionally.

Yet remained stable.

Visible.

Present.

Alive.

It had been almost a month since his friend disappeared.

Yet seeing him still felt strange.

Tyler smiled faintly.

"You better not be dead."

Dr. Cross entered the chamber carrying several ancient books.

The archaeologist looked exhausted.

Most people slept eight hours.

She apparently considered that optional.

"Talking to him again?"

Tyler shrugged.

"Maybe he can hear me."

The woman smiled.

"Maybe."

The answer surprised him.

"You think so?"

Dr. Cross carefully placed the books onto the table.

"The Gatekeepers left messages across time."

A pause.

"They communicate in ways we don't fully understand."

Hope flickered briefly.

The possibility seemed impossible.

Yet so did most things lately.

Tyler looked toward the image.

For the first time, he noticed something strange.

The projection had changed.

Very slightly.

A faint golden symbol now glowed near Mason's shoulder.

The symbol hadn't been there before.

Dr. Cross immediately noticed.

Her eyes widened.

"No."

Tyler looked confused.

"What?"

The archaeologist stepped closer.

Studying the symbol carefully.

The color drained from her face.

"What is it?"

She looked up.

Concern filled her eyes.

"Someone found him."

The room became silent.

The next morning arrived quickly.

Mason stood before a massive gateway located near the edge of the Crossroads.

The structure towered hundreds of feet overhead.

Golden energy flowed through ancient runes carved into its surface.

The gateway connected directly to one of the distant worlds.

Aurelian waited nearby.

Alongside him stood Lyra.

The former Gatekeeper looked excited.

Far too excited.

Mason found that concerning.

"You've done this before, right?"

Lyra grinned.

"Hundreds of times."

That wasn't reassuring.

The gateway began activating.

Golden energy surged through the massive structure.

The pathway beyond slowly became visible.

Mountains.

Forests.

Cities.

A living world.

Mason stared.

The sight felt incredible.

For weeks he had seen worlds from a distance.

Now he was finally visiting one.

The excitement mixed with nervousness.

"What should I expect?"

Aurelian smiled.

"Trouble."

The answer felt predictable.

The old Gatekeeper stepped forward.

His expression became serious.

"Listen carefully."

Mason immediately focused.

"The world you're visiting is called Elyria."

The image within the gateway shifted.

A beautiful kingdom appeared.

Silver towers.

Crystal rivers.

Floating islands.

The place looked magical.

Peaceful.

Perfect.

Then the image changed.

Darkness spread across portions of the landscape.

Entire cities burned.

The sky turned black.

The transformation happened rapidly.

Violently.

The contrast felt shocking.

"The Void arrived three days ago."

Silence.

The reality settled heavily.

This wasn't a mission.

This wasn't a field trip.

People were dying.

Aurelian looked directly at him.

"Your job isn't to save everyone."

The statement surprised him.

"What?"

The old warrior's expression softened.

"No Guardian can save everyone."

A pause.

"The moment you believe otherwise, you'll destroy yourself."

The words carried experience.

Painful experience.

Mason immediately understood.

Aurelian wasn't giving a lesson.

He was sharing a warning.

The old Gatekeeper stepped back.

The gateway fully opened.

The pathway shimmered with golden light.

The mission had begun.

Mason took a deep breath.

Then stepped forward.

Toward his first world.

Toward his first real battle.

Toward the future waiting beyond the Gate.

He never noticed the shadow watching from the darkness behind the portal.

Nor the crimson eyes slowly opening within that shadow.

The Void King had already made his move.
