Blood & Eternity

Blood & Eternity

For eight hundred years, Morgaine of the Battles and Caelum of the Broken Sun have fought each other across a dying world.

The blight consuming the land isn't natural. Scholar Varek reveals it's a 20-year-old Erath working — twelve anchor points feeding a Collection Center at its geometric heart, harvesting verath — the life-force of the world — and sustaining the war as cover.

They form an uneasy alliance. Eleven days, twelve points. Each disabled anchor weakens the blight but draws the Erath architect Serath closer. At Point Seven, a concentrated verath field strips every constructed defense and leaves only the irreducible core — terrifyingly intimate.

As they close in, the field reveals their cores to each other: she is not a weapon, but a girl who once spent a morning watching insects because they were intricate; he is not a warlord, but a builder who wanted to build something that would outlast him — a garden for that girl.

Points ten, eleven, twelve fall. At the Collection Center — not a building but a low circle with a shaft of wrong light where life is hoarded — they must enter together, alone, stripped of everything. Two cores are less predictable than one. Serath, who studied them separately, doesn't know what they are together.

They emerge into clear gold late-afternoon light. Operation complete. Caelum says: "I said I would take you to find a field." Varek: "Half mile east. Blight did not reach it. Untouched, all this time."

In that meadow they crouch together and watch a small brown beetle navigate the grass with absolute purpose. Morgaine realizes she stopped seeing particular things — everything became aggregate, numbers, populations.

Meadow quiet, evening coming east, she places her hand over his where it rests in the grass. He turns his hand and holds hers. They sit until light is gone and stars begin.

When they walk back to camp, her hand is still in his.

She does not manage it at all.
