Chapter 3

The Hackers

Naturalized citizen Leon Sküm came from a technical background and had founded SkümTek, Inc., a computer manufacturer, network/software provider, and basic all-around technical service company. This company rivaled all computer companies and surpassed all other computer companies combined,  years ago. It rose to fame with its proprietary Unix-based operating system. In its first three years of existence, it went from a small shop to a global force. Over the last several years, it has dominated the computer field.

Part of SkümTek’s brilliance was that Leon had surrounded himself with the brightest and best computer programmers in the world. He even hired some from the dark web who were known hackers. He treated this group with care and pampered them so much so that they would have no need to hack or betray the company. These hackers were loyal to Leon, to a fault.

It so happened that SkümTek had acquired the software company that was behind the operating system that ran the Sovereignty voting machines. This company controlled ninety percent of the voting machines worldwide.

Leon needed to invoke phase two of his plan. Phase one of the donations from Alliance Consortium went smoothly and undetected by any auditors or prying eyes. Phase two’s plan would be the manipulation of a percentage of the votes in every district/location across the country to sway votes in their direction.

The plan, of course, started months ago, unbeknownst to Hawthorne or any of his fellow candidates of his party. This part of the plan required total secrecy with only him and two other trusted hackers, Sanji and Marcin.

The two of them had been working tirelessly on the firmware upgrade, and it went live months before early voting began. Sovereignty engineers passed the firmware upgrade, praised its firewall protections, and deemed this version ‘voter-ready’, come early voting times.

In the meeting with Sanji and Marcin right before early voting started to ensure the plan was implemented, Leon needed updates and asked, “Tell me about the status of the latest firmware update? When was it provided to the Sovereignty engineers, and did they push it to ‘Production’?”

Sanji responded, “It was provided to them about two months ago, they tested it for a month, and it was pushed live, way before schedule, weeks before early voting started.”

Marcin added, “More importantly, the key element of this update was that the manipulation of the votes would only occur with the start date of early voting and go through election night. It would only do this in their ‘Production’ environment. We designed it this way so that testing in any ‘Non-Production’ environment would not produce the shift due to the two factors of the date and the environment.

“We were concerned,” he continued, “that if they modified the system date on ‘Stage’ or their ‘Dev’ environment, they might have seen some anomalies. This way, with both requirements of being on ‘Production’ and the date span, it would only occur in ‘Production’ and be less likely to be discovered.”

Sanji continued, “The other feature of this trick was, and this is brilliant, to shift the results on a micro level at each location. This would allow the process to go undetected and therefore allow the votes to go ‘our’ way.”

Happy with the results and with his two hackers, he rewarded each with newly deposited funds in their accounts.

“I hope you spend your funds in Laos and Poland, respectively, and boost your economies. Let us keep in touch as I will have more jobs and more rewards for you two in the future,” Leon closed the meeting.

After that, he removed the user account from the system and would set up a new one when he needed to contact them again.

Phase two was implemented and was ready.

On election day, the ‘miracle’ Hawthorne’s team had hoped for played out. The House and Senate at the national level, the Presidency, forty-three of the fifty states’ governor spots, and most of those states’ congresses went in Hawthorne’s and his party’s favor.

“Operation Blitzkrieg started the next day!”
