Chapter 3

Chapter 3

The first date happened on a Friday night. For three days Maya had debated whether she should go.

Part of her wanted to focus on school.

Part of her wanted to be responsible.

Part of her knew she barely knew Rico "Rel" Alvarez.

But another part—

The part that smiled every time she saw his name appear on her phone—Wanted to take a chance. In the end, that part won.At seven o'clock sharp,

Rel pulled into her parents' driveway. The vehicle immediately caught her attention.A black Dodge Charger.Clean.Tinted windows.Expensive rims. The kind of car that stood out in a neighborhood like hers. Her father noticed too.

Robert Carter stood at the living room window with his arms crossed.

Watching.

Evaluating.

Judging.

Maya laughed.

"Dad."

"What?"

"You look like you're about to interrogate him."

Robert didn't smile.

"Maybe I am."

The answer wasn't entirely a joke. When the doorbell rang, Maya's stomach fluttered. Her mother grinned. Her father remained suspicious.Rel entered the house carrying flowers.Fresh flowers. For her mother. The gesture immediately earned points.Angela Carter smiled warmly.

"Well, aren't you sweet?"

Rel nodded respectfully.

"Nice to meet you, ma'am."

Then he turned toward Robert. The atmosphere changed slightly. Two men.Sizing each other up.Studying each other.Rel extended his hand.

"Sir."

Robert shook it firmly.

A little too firmly.

Rel didn't flinch.

The older man noticed.

Interesting.

Very interesting.

For the next ten minutes, conversation remained polite.

Respectful.

Comfortable.

Yet Robert couldn't shake a feeling.

Something about Rel seemed rehearsed.

Too smooth.

Too polished.

Like someone who had mastered first impressions.

The feeling bothered him.

A lot.

As Maya and Rel walked toward the door, Robert spoke.

"What do you do?"

The question hung in the air.

Rel smiled.

The same easy smile.

"I do a little bit of everything."

The answer sounded harmless.

Yet Robert's expression immediately hardened.

Because people with legitimate jobs usually had specific answers.

Electrician.

Teacher.

Mechanic.

Salesman.

Not a little bit of everything.

Rel noticed the reaction.

But his smile never disappeared.

"I'll have her home by eleven."

Then they left.

The moment the front door closed, Robert looked at his wife.

"I don't trust him."

Angela sighed.

"You don't trust any boy."

"No."

He shook his head.

"Something's off."

Meanwhile, Maya sat in the passenger seat completely unaware of the concerns forming behind her.

The evening felt magical.

Rel took her to a waterfront restaurant overlooking the Indian River.

The food was excellent.

The conversation flowed effortlessly.

For hours they laughed.

Talked.

Shared stories.

Dreams.

Goals.

Life.

For the first time in a long time, Maya felt completely seen.

Completely appreciated.

Rel had a gift.

The ability to make people feel like the most important person in the room.

And tonight, Maya was the center of his attention.

"What made you want to become a nurse?"

She smiled.

"I like helping people."

Rel nodded thoughtfully.

"That's rare."

"What is?"

"People who genuinely care."

The compliment warmed her heart.

The evening continued perfectly.

Almost too perfectly.

Then came the first warning.

Small.

Easy to ignore.

Dangerous because of its subtlety.

As they left the restaurant, a group of young men stood near the parking lot.

The moment they saw Rel, their demeanor changed.

Respect.

Recognition.

Caution.

One of them nodded.

"What's up, Rel?"

Rel nodded back.

The interaction lasted only seconds.

Yet Maya noticed something.

The way they looked at him.

Not like a friend.

Not like an acquaintance.

Like someone important.

Someone influential.

Someone powerful.

The observation lingered.

"What was that about?"

Rel shrugged.

"Nothing."

The answer felt dismissive.

Yet she let it go.

Later that evening, another warning arrived.

This one from her best friend, Ashley.

The two women spoke on the phone after the date.

"So how was it?"

Maya smiled.

"Amazing."

Ashley hesitated.

Then sighed.

"What?"

"You know people talk about him, right?"

The words immediately irritated her.

"What people?"

"People."

Ashley paused.

"I've heard things."

Maya rolled her eyes.

"Like what?"

"I don't know."

The answer sounded uncertain.

"Just be careful."

Be careful.

The warning felt unnecessary.

Unfair even.

Because nobody could actually tell her anything specific.

Only rumors.

Whispers.

Assumptions.

And Maya hated judging people based on gossip.

Still, the warning planted a seed.

Tiny.

Barely noticeable.

Yet present.

Over the following weeks, Maya and Rel grew closer.

Much closer.

The dates became more frequent.

The conversations became deeper.

The attraction became undeniable.

Everywhere they went, people seemed to know him.

Gas stations.

Restaurants.

Shopping centers.

People greeted him constantly.

Respected him.

Admired him.

Some even seemed intimidated by him.

The attention fascinated Maya.

Part of her enjoyed it.

The confidence.

The charisma.

The influence.

It all felt exciting.

Different from the boys she grew up around.

Different from the predictable future she had planned.

Different from everything.

Then one evening, her father sat beside her on the back porch.

The conversation felt casual at first.

Until it wasn't.

"You like him?"

Maya smiled.

"Yeah."

Robert nodded slowly.

Then asked the question she had been avoiding.

"What does he do for a living?"

The question immediately made her uncomfortable.

Because she didn't really know.

Not exactly.

Rel always seemed to have money.

Always seemed available.

Always seemed connected.

Yet specifics remained vague.

The realization bothered her.

Just a little.

Her father noticed the hesitation immediately.

And that told him everything.

"Maya."

His voice softened.

"Just be careful."

There was that warning again.

Be careful. The words seemed to follow her everywhere. From friends. From  family. From people who barely knew him.

The repetition should have mattered more.

It should have.

But attraction has a way of muting warnings.

And love—Or what feels like love—

Has a way of convincing people that everyone else is wrong. That their story will be different.

That their ending will be different.

As summer turned into fall, Maya found herself falling harder than she ever expected.Harder than she planned.

Harder than she should have.

And somewhere beneath the romance, beneath the excitement, beneath the chemistry, the truth waited patiently.

Hidden.Dangerous.Unavoidable.

Because sooner or later, every secret comes into the light.

And Rico "Rel" Alvarez was carrying far more secrets than Maya could imagine.
