Chapter 5

The Guardian Owl

The Guardian Owl remained perched upon the stone beside the pond, his enormous golden eyes fixed on Tommy with an intensity that made it difficult to look away. Although the owl had spoken calmly, there was something about his presence that filled the clearing with quiet authority, as though every tree, flower, and blade of grass recognized him as a protector of the forest.

Tommy shifted uncomfortably beneath the owl's gaze.

"Chosen dreamer?" he repeated. "I think you might have the wrong person."

The owl's feathers rustled softly as what appeared to be amusement flickered across his face.

"I assure you, Thomas Carter, I do not."

Tommy blinked.

"You know my full name?"

The owl raised an eyebrow.

"I know far more than your name."

"That's not creepy at all," Leo muttered.

Spark snorted with laughter.

The Guardian Owl ignored the comment and turned his attention toward Luna.

"You felt it too."

The fox nodded.

"The darkness is moving."

The owl's expression immediately grew serious.

The atmosphere within the clearing seemed to change.

Even Tommy could feel it.

A moment earlier the pond had appeared peaceful and welcoming. Now the shadows surrounding the clearing felt deeper somehow.

More watchful.

The Guardian Owl spread one wing toward the crystal water.

"Come."

Nobody questioned him.

The group slowly approached the edge of the pond.

As Tommy looked into the water, he expected to see his reflection staring back.

Instead, the surface began to ripple.

Images appeared.

At first, they were blurry.

Then they sharpened.

Tommy watched in amazement as scenes unfolded across the pond like a moving painting.

Ancient forests.

Towering trees.

Creatures unlike anything he had ever seen.

Guardians standing watch beneath moonlit skies.

"What is this?" Lily whispered.

"The memory of the forest," the owl replied.

The images continued changing.

Tommy saw generations of guardians protecting the Whispering Woods.

Some were animals.

Others looked almost human.

All of them shared the same purpose.

Protecting something important.

Protecting balance.

Protecting magic.

Then the images changed again.

Darkness spread across the water.

Trees withered.

Streams dried up.

Creatures fled.

A shadow moved through the forest like a living storm.

Tommy felt a chill run through him.

The darkness didn't look natural.

It looked alive.

"What is that?" he asked.

For a moment, no one answered.

Finally, the Guardian Owl spoke.

"We call it the Hollow Shadow."

The name seemed to echo across the clearing.

Tommy noticed Luna lower her head slightly.

Even Spark looked uncomfortable.

"It isn't merely a creature," the owl continued. "It is fear, anger, and despair given form. Long ago, the guardians managed to contain it deep beneath the roots of the Whispering Woods."

Tommy's stomach tightened.

"And now it's escaping?"

The owl nodded.

"The prison that held it is weakening."

The pond darkened.

The shadow on its surface grew larger.

Tommy couldn't explain why but looking at it made him uneasy.

As though the darkness wanted to be noticed.

Wanted to be remembered.

"The growls we heard..." Lily began.

"Were the first signs," Luna said quietly.

Silence settled over the clearing.

Tommy stared at the images in the water.

Part of him wanted to dismiss everything as impossible.

A talking fox.

A magical forest.

An ancient evil trapped beneath the earth.

Yet the evidence stood before him.

And deep down, he knew something even more troubling.

This wasn't a misunderstanding.

This wasn't a dream.

It was real.

The Guardian Owl's gaze shifted toward him.

"Do you know why the forest chose you?"

Tommy shook his head.

"No."

The owl studied him carefully.

"Because you listen."

Tommy frowned.

"Lots of people listen."

"Not like you."

The owl glanced toward the surrounding trees.

"Most people hear only what they expect to hear. You hear what others ignore."

The words settled heavily in Tommy's mind.

He thought about the whispers.

The fox.

The strange feeling that had always drawn him toward the woods.

Maybe it hadn't been his imagination after all.

Maybe the forest really had been calling him.

A sudden crack echoed somewhere beyond the clearing.

Everyone turned.

The sound had come from deeper within the forest.

A second crack followed.

Then another.

Birds exploded from the treetops.

The pond's surface rippled violently.

The Guardian Owl's expression hardened.

"That is closer than it should be."

Spark's wings began glowing brighter.

"That's definitely not good."

Tommy didn't need anyone to explain.

He could hear it now.

Branches breaking.

Trees groaning.

Something large moving through the woods.

Something coming their way.

The Guardian Owl stepped forward.

For the first time since meeting him, Tommy saw concern in the ancient guardian's eyes.

"The Hollow Shadow has found a way to reach the surface sooner than we feared."

Luna's ears flattened.

"Then we don't have much time."

"No," the owl agreed.

His golden gaze settled upon Tommy.

"Which means your training must begin immediately."

Tommy's heart nearly stopped.

"My what?"

The owl smiled.

"Your training."

Tommy exchanged looks with Lily and Leo.

Neither looked any less confused than he felt.

Yet one thing was becoming very clear.

Following Luna into the Whispering Woods had changed everything.

And whatever came next would be far more dangerous than any of them had imagined.
