"10. Gravity--Out of the Grey"
The heated passion of the previous tracks now gave way before a quieter, colder emotion: foreboding.
You are lighter than air / So high you can barely bear the freedom / To do as you choose / No, nothing gets you down / No boundaries or chains around your soul / Making your own truth / But don't you know, balloons / Never really reach the moon / And even birds high in the sky / Must come down, with the
Gravity / That pulls you to your knees / There has to be a final reckoning / Gravity / You know you won't escape
By grace or grave, you'll feel the gravity
When you're nearing the end / Of your journey, don't pretend / No, the light you see, it might not be the Sun / For your heart will melt like wax / When your arms discover that / The wings you've made cannot take you home / Oh, don't you know, balloons / Never really reach the moon / And even birds high in the sky / Must come down / Let the
Gravity / Pull you to your knees...
This one also included a video, but the lyrics didn't need much illustration. His choice of "Gravity" here suggested school as a place where the young learn foolishness and irresponsibility of a kind so deliberate that only an adult could develop them. The seduction of his offspring, having begun in an increasingly derelict church, was now in full swing. The kids were getting high on hot air, as in the balloon, and drifting toward an ugly fate, losing their innocence on the way like the boy who aged into decrepitude.
If this playlist had been a recent creation and its maker still alive, she might have scoffed at "Gravity" and its soft but severe message of warning, but now the list was at least sixteen years old, Lazarus was dead, and at least one of his descendants had behaved precisely as described. A chill shook her as she thought of Mom...and even herself. Just how hard had her own heart been prior to reading the Verses?
