Chapter 3

WHY AREN'T YOU IN THE CAR YET

Sound returns first.

ONYA:

“Mommy… wake up…”

Irina is slumped by the car. Still standing.

Onya is patting her leg.

Irina’s eyes flutter.

She blinks like she’s surfacing from deep water.

IRINA (confused, irritated):

“What are you doing, Onya? Get in the car. Why aren't you in the car yet?”

ONYA (Earnestly):

“Because, mommy, you were sleeping!”

Irina shakes it off. Forces a smile that doesn’t reach her eyes.

She opens the driver’s door.

---

Onya climbs into the back seat.

Irina starts the engine.

The headlights sweep across the empty lot.

 Nothing there.

The streetlight flickers again.
