Chapter 18

I NEVER LIKE WHAT YOU FIND

A sleek, black 1950s Mustang sits in sharp contrast to the back of the tired apartment complex.

Maggie moves with purpose now.

No hesitation.

Kyle lingers near the stairs to his unit.

 MAGGIE:

“Stay inside. Lock the door. Don’t answer it for anyone.”

Kyle nods.

But neither of them believes that’s enough.

Maggie gets in the Mustang.

The engine roars to life.

[INT. MUSTANG – MOVING – DAY]

Maggie drives fast.

Controlled.

Her jaw tight.

She pulls out her secure phone.

Dials.

 It rings once.

Twice.

 LEILA:

“This better be good, Maggie. I’m on air in fifteen.”

MAGGIE:

“Cancel it.”

Beat.

LEILA:

“Excuse me? Are you letting this Special Agent stuff go to your head?”

MAGGIE:

“I need everything you’ve got on missing persons near storm drains, culverts, tunnel systems. Past twenty years. Especially unreported ones.”

Silence on the line.

LEILA:

“Why?”

Maggie hesitates.

MAGGIE:

“Because I just saw something I can’t explain.”

Another beat.

Leila’s tone shifts.

Serious now.

LEILA:

“Meet me at the station. I’ve been digging into quiet disappearances already. You’re not going to like what I found.”

Maggie tightens her grip on the steering wheel.

MAGGIE:

“I never like what you find.”

She hangs up.

[EXT. CITY STREETS – DAY]

The Mustang weaves through traffic.

The world looks normal.

People crossing streets.

Construction crews.

Morning radio chatter.

Life is happening.

 [INSIDE SPECIAL AGENT MAGGIE’s MUSTANG]

Maggie glances at her reflection in the rearview mirror.

For a split second—

Her eyes almost flicker white again.

She blinks it away.

Determination replaces fear.

MAGGIE (to herself):

“Let’s see what you are.”

She presses harder on the gas.
