Chapter 1

The Invitation

The envelope arrived without a return address.

It rested alone in the center of the polished walnut conference table, untouched by the stack of contracts, quarterly reports, and unopened correspondence that normally greeted Alexander Pierce each Monday morning.

His executive assistant stood silently near the doorway.

“I didn’t bring it in,” she said before he could ask. “Security says it was already here when they unlocked the office.”

Alexander frowned.

The thirty-eighth floor of Pierce Global Holdings wasn’t a place where mysterious packages simply appeared. Every visitor signed in. Every delivery was scanned. Every employee carried biometric credentials. Security was one of the company’s greatest selling points.

Yet somehow…

The black envelope had slipped through every layer.

Its thick, textured paper felt expensive beneath his fingertips. A gold palm tree was embossed into the center, gleaming beneath the morning sunlight pouring through the floor-to-ceiling windows.

There was only one line of text.

Mr. Alexander Pierce

Nothing more.

No company logo.

No postage.

No courier label.

Just his name.

“Did anyone touch this?”

“No.”

Alexander hesitated before breaking the crimson wax seal.

Inside rested a heavy cream-colored invitation.

Elegant.

Simple.

Beautiful.

The words seemed almost too perfect.

YOU ARE EXCLUSIVELY INVITED

TO

EDEN CAY

Some invitations are impossible to refuse.

A private luxury retreat reserved for six distinguished guests.

Seven days.

Complete privacy.

Personalized experiences.

Transportation provided.

Departure: Friday.

Confidentiality required.

At the bottom was a handwritten sentence.

You’ve spent your life building success.

Now discover what you’ve been running from.

Alexander read it twice.

Then a third time.

A chill crept across his spine.

He folded the invitation and slipped it back inside the envelope.

“Find out who sent this.”

His assistant nodded.

“I already tried.”

“And?”

“There is no Eden Cay.”

Across Houston…

Dr. Maya Bennett finished her final patient before noticing the identical black envelope resting on her office chair.

Across New York…

Technology billionaire Ethan Cross found another waiting inside his penthouse elevator.

In Chicago…

Federal Judge Caroline Whitmore received hers from a courthouse bailiff who couldn’t remember who handed it to him.

In Los Angeles…

Award-winning investigative journalist Rachel Torres discovered one sitting atop her laptop after returning from lunch.

And in Miami…

Former Navy commander Daniel Brooks found the invitation tucked neatly beneath the windshield wiper of his vintage convertible inside a gated parking garage monitored by dozens of security cameras.

Six invitations.

Six strangers.

Six lives carefully chosen.

By nightfall, each recipient had reached the same conclusion.

It had to be an elaborate marketing campaign.

Or perhaps a gathering of influential leaders.

Nothing more.

Still…

Every attempt to locate Eden Cay failed.

No maps.

No websites.

No ownership records.

No satellite images.

Nothing.

It was as though the island had never existed.

Yet twenty-four hours later, each guest received a second message.

This one appeared on every phone.

No number.

No email address.

Only six words.

Your transportation departs Friday at noon.

Then another.

Come alone.

The message vanished before anyone could screenshot it.

Even the phone carriers insisted no transmission had ever occurred.

Alexander stood in front of the windows overlooking downtown Houston.

The city stretched for miles beneath him.

He had negotiated billion-dollar acquisitions.

Survived hostile takeovers.

Built an empire from nothing.

He didn’t believe in coincidences.

He believed in leverage.

Control.

Preparation.

Yet for the first time in decades…

Something had happened beyond his understanding.

He opened the invitation once more.

His eyes settled on the handwritten sentence.

Now discover what you’ve been running from.

His reflection stared back from the glass.

For a brief moment, he barely recognized the man looking back.

Far below, thunder rumbled across the city.

Alexander looked toward the darkening sky.

He had no way of knowing that accepting the invitation would become the final decision of his old life.

Because once the boat reached Eden Cay…

No one would ever leave the island unchanged.

And some…

Would never leave at all.
