Chapter 1

The grenade that would set it off

You don’t remember the sound first.

The house had a way of going quiet before anything happened, like it was holding its breath right along with you.

The air changed.

The walls tightened.

The silence thickened into something you could almost taste.

You didn’t know the word inheritance yet.

You didn’t know that some families pass down silence the way others pass down heirlooms.

You didn’t know that this moment — this doorway, this breath, this quiet would echo through decades of your life.

You only knew the feeling:

Something was about to explode, and somehow it would be your job to hold the pieces.

You slid off the couch and padded toward the hallway, the carpet rough under your bare feet. You remember the way the light fell — a thin, crooked line across the floorboards, like the house was trying to show you where not to step. You remember the smell of dust and old wood. You remember your heartbeat, loud enough to drown out everything else.

And then you saw it.

The moment the grenade was pulled.

The moment your childhood split into before and after. The moment that blocked out much of your childhood.

The moment the silence began.

Later, you would learn that silence can be a weapon, a shield, a language, and unfortunately a curse.

But in that moment, it was just the only thing you had.

You didn’t know yet that one day, you would break the pattern.

You didn’t know yet that you would become the one who refused to pass the grenade on.

All you knew was the quiet.

And the quiet knew you back….
