The Plaza of Blood
The city of Ponce, Puerto Rico, was alive with noise.
Music drifted from passing cars. Vendors shouted from sidewalk stands. Children laughed as they chased pigeons across the colorful brick walkways surrounding Plaza Las Delicias. The scent of roasted pork, coffee, and ocean air mixed together beneath the blazing Caribbean sun.
To the average person, it looked like another beautiful afternoon on the island.
To Hector Santiago, it felt like a funeral.
The forty-eight-year-old Afro-Puerto Rican stood near the famous fountain in the center of the plaza, his dark eyes slowly scanning the crowd. Years in the streets had sharpened his instincts beyond those of ordinary men.
Something was wrong.
The city was too quiet.
Not physically quiet.
Spiritually quiet.
The kind of silence that came before gunfire.
Hector adjusted the cuffs of his white linen shirt and continued watching the people moving through the plaza. Unlike the younger generation of traffickers flooding Puerto Rico's streets, Hector didn't wear heavy jewelry or expensive designer clothing. He didn't need to.
His reputation traveled ahead of him.
For more than a decade, Hector Santiago had controlled major narcotics routes throughout southern Puerto Rico. He had survived gang wars, federal investigations, robberies, betrayals, and assassination attempts.
Men feared him.
Others respected him.
Most did both.
Across the plaza, seated on a concrete bench beneath a royal palm tree, sat his only son.
Dantonio Santiago.
Santi.
Twenty years old.
Tall.
Athletic.
Strong.
The image of what Hector himself had looked like at that age.
Santi leaned back on the bench sipping a cold soda while watching people pass by. To outsiders he looked relaxed.
He wasn't.
He noticed it too.
The shaved ice vendor near the courthouse suddenly began packing up his cart.
A group of old men playing dominoes quietly gathered their pieces and left.
A mother walking with her children crossed the street for no apparent reason.
The energy had shifted.
Santi stood up.
His eyes swept the plaza.
"Papi."
Hector looked over.
Their eyes met.
Neither man spoke They didn't have to.Both knew.Danger
was coming.Fast.
The scream of tires shattered the afternoon.
A white delivery van appeared from around the corner and slammed violently against the curb.
People turned.
Confused.
Then the side doors exploded open.
Three armed men jumped out.
Each wore tactical gear.
Each carried rifles.
And standing between them was a younger man with cold eyes and a predator's smile.
Alejandro Vargas.
The future king of bloodshed.
"Hector Santiago!" Alejandro shouted.
The plaza erupted.
Automatic gunfire exploded across the square.
Tourists dove for cover.
Glass shattered.
People screamed.
Children cried.
Panic swept through the crowd.
Hector moved instantly.
His hand shot toward the pistol concealed beneath his shirt.
Too late.
Bullets struck him before he could fully clear the weapon.
One round.
Then three.
Then ten more.
His body staggered backward beneath the storm of gunfire.
"Papi!"
Santi launched from the bench.
The world slowed.
Hector stumbled into the fountain.
Blue water instantly turned crimson.
The king of Ponce collapsed.
Santi drew his revolver and fired back.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
One bullet shattered a window on the van.
Another struck metal.
The third disappeared into the chaos.
Alejandro turned.
For the first time, the two men locked eyes.
The killer.
And the son.
Alejandro slowly raised his rifle.
Preparing to finish what he started.
Police sirens suddenly echoed through the city.
The hit squad reacted immediately.
"Move!"
The gunmen retreated toward the van.
Seconds later they disappeared into traffic.
Leaving death behind.
"No!"
Santi sprinted through the fountain water.
He dropped to his knees beside his father.
Blood covered Hector's shirt.
Blood covered the water.
Blood covered Santi's hands.
Around them the plaza dissolved into confusion.
People shouted.
Police arrived.
Paramedics pushed through the crowd.
None of it mattered.
The only thing Santi could see was his father.
Hector's breathing was shallow.
His eyes were fading.
But they found his son.
"Dantonio..."
"Papi, stay with me."
Hector tried to speak.
Blood filled his mouth.
Santi gripped his father's hand.
The powerful man who had once controlled the southern region of Puerto Rico now looked small.
Human.
Mortal.
His fingers tightened around his son's wrist one final time.
Then slowly released.
The king was gone.
Santi remained kneeling in the fountain long after the paramedics arrived.
Long after the police secured the scene.
Long after the crowd gathered around the yellow tape.
Something had changed inside him.
Something permanent.
Something dangerous.
On that day, a father died.
A son was born.
And the streets became hungry once again.
