The Burn Pile
For fifty years, Earl has known how to make things disappear.
At the far edge of his farm, where the grass gives way to red clay, the burn pile has swallowed a lifetime of old papers, worn clothes, forgotten belongings—and things better left unnamed.
Four days after burying his wife, Maren, Earl returns to the pile to honor one of her final requests: Don’t let it go cold. There’s still things that need burning.
But something beneath the ash refuses to burn.
And as Earl begins to dig, the past he's spent half a century reducing to smoke starts giving things back.
Some things survive the fire. Some things wait.
