In the autumn of 212 BCE, Syracuse falls to Rome.
As Roman soldiers break into the city, Cidius, a frightened adolescent with no training for war, is swept into the collapse of everything he knows. He escapes with a shrinking band of soldiers, civilians, wounded men, and animals under the command of Menon, a hardened local leader trying to keep them alive long enough to reach safety.
