Chapter 3

THE BASEMENT

 

The entrance was a door that looked like it led to storage.

Behind the storage was a wall.

Behind the wall, accessed by pressing a specific stone in a specific sequence that Tariq performed with the ease of long practice, was a staircase.

And at the bottom of the staircase was light.

Not much of it. Three oil lamps and a battery lantern, arranged in a rough triangle, casting overlapping circles of gold across a low-ceilinged room that smelled of earth and candle wax and the specific smell of people who have been afraid together long enough to stop being afraid of each other.

They were already gathered.

Thirty-one people in a room built for twenty. Families pressed together on low benches and overturned crates and patches of carpet laid directly on the packed earth floor. Old men. Young women. Teenagers with the carefully neutral faces of people who have learned that expressions can be evidence.

And the children.

Eight of them.

Ranging from perhaps five years old to twelve. Sitting together in the front, cross-legged on a piece of carpet, their small Bibles in their laps. The books were worn — pages soft from handling, covers bent back, edges dark with the oils of small hands. One girl had written her name inside the front cover in careful Arabic letters.

They looked up when I came in.

I was, I knew, an unusual sight. A tall bald American in a borrowed robe with sand still on his knees and redness still in his eyes from the dust of a jeep that had stopped too fast. I was not what they expected. I could see it in their faces — the slight recalibration, the assessment.

The youngest child — a boy of perhaps five, with enormous dark eyes and a Bible so large for his lap that he had to hold it with both hands to keep it from sliding — looked at me for a long moment.

Then he smiled.

The specific, uncomplicated smile of a child who has decided you are safe.

I had to look at the ceiling for a moment.

Tariq introduced me simply, in Arabic, as a brother from far away who had come to tell them something important. He used no names. No details. The room understood this and accepted it.

I stood before them.

Thirty-one people. Eight children. Twenty-four hours before a militia that wanted them dead would begin its final search.

I thought about Cornerstone Community Church in Meridian, Mississippi. The folding chairs. The coffee in styrofoam cups. The coordinator standing at the front on a Sunday morning saying we need someone, and the room going quiet, and everyone looking at the floor.

I had not looked at the floor.

Not because I was brave. Not because I was qualified. Because something in me had heard something in the silence — a voice I could not have described then and can barely describe now — that said simply:

Go.

And I had gone.

I opened my mouth.

I spoke in their dialect — the specific Arabic of this region, the words I had spent three years learning in a small apartment in Dearborn, Michigan, practicing with a Lebanese tutor who had laughed at my pronunciation for two years before he stopped laughing and said, you are ready.

"In the beginning," I said, "God made everything. And everything He made, He called good."

The room was absolutely still.

I told them the whole story.

Not the Sunday school version. Not the abbreviated mission-trip version. The whole, unedited, costly, glorious story — from the garden to the fall to the law to the prophets to the night a baby was born in a feeding trough in Bethlehem while angels sang overhead and shepherds ran and stars moved and heaven itself held its breath.

I told them about a man who healed the sick and raised the dead and touched the untouchable and ate with the people everyone else had given up on.

I told them about a Thursday night in a garden where a man prayed so hard he sweat blood, and about the soldiers who came, and about the friend who sold him for thirty pieces of silver.

I told them about the cross.

I did not soften it. They were people who understood violence. They had seen crosses of a different kind. I owed them the truth of this one — the nails, the hours, the moment when the man who had healed everyone else refused to heal himself, because healing himself was not the assignment.

"Father, forgive them," I said in their dialect. "They do not know what they are doing."

A woman in the back put her hand over her mouth.

I told them about the third day.

I told them about an empty tomb and a folded burial cloth and a woman weeping in a garden who heard her name spoken by someone she thought was the gardener, and turned, and understood.

I told them what it meant.

That the God who made everything had seen everything we had done with everything — the burning and the hiding and the betraying and the fear — and had decided the answer was not judgment but a cross. Had decided that what we owed, He would pay. Had decided that the distance between what we were and what He intended could be crossed, and that He would cross it Himself, in a body, at a cost that cannot be calculated.

"And He is not finished," I said. "He is alive. Right now. In this room. In the dark underneath this village in this country that wants you to believe He cannot reach you here."

I looked at the children.

"He reaches you here."

The boy with the enormous Bible and the enormous eyes was crying.

He didn't wipe his face.

He just held his Bible tighter.

I kept going.

"His name is Jesus Christ. And if you give Him your life — not the performance of a life, not the cleaned-up version, not the version that tries hard enough — but the actual thing, broken and afraid and covered in sand and trembling — He will take it. He has been waiting for it. He came a long way for it."

I touched my bald head without thinking.

"I am not a covered man," I said. "I have no wool. No disguise. I came here exposed, and afraid, and honestly not entirely sure I was the right person for this. I still'm not sure. But I know this: the God I serve does not need the best of us. He needs the available ones. The ones who say yes when the room goes quiet and everyone else looks at the floor."

I looked at them.

"You said yes. Every one of you. Every time you came down those stairs, you said yes. And He saw it. He has always seen it. And whatever happens tomorrow or the day after — whatever they take from you, wherever they scatter you — they cannot take this."

I pressed my hand to my chest.

"They cannot take what is in here. Because what is in here is not yours. It is His. And He does not lose what is His."

The room was completely silent.

Then the boy with the enormous Bible stood up.

He was five years old. He barely reached my waist.

He said, in the careful Arabic of a child who had been taught to pronounce the word correctly:

"Ameen."

And the room said it with him.

"Ameen."

Thirty-one voices in a basement in Northern Syria, underneath a village that wanted them gone, twenty-four hours before the militia came looking.

"Ameen."

I bowed my head.

The oil lamps flickered.

The darkness did not overcome them.
