Chapter 1

The Anatomy of Malice

The top of the mountain didn’t just move; it shrieked.

It all began as a deep subterranean rumble that vibrated through the soles of Mark’s snow boots, as if the earth’s bones were grinding together. That’s when the unbearable silence of the Blackbear Ridge backcountry shattered right before him. The North Face, which had stood in all its majestic glory and jagged splendor just moments earlier, ceased to exist. In its place, a wall of white death surged straight downward, moving with a single, fluid motion at a speed that defied all physics.

Looking up at the ridge, he saw a perfect geometric line in the snow where the slide had begun, a clean cut that suggested the avalanche was no accident but a calculated act. His breath hitched—this was not a freak event but a harvest.

He didn’t have time to scream before the white wall claimed him, sealing his last breath beneath twenty feet of compressed, frozen malice.

The woman stood deep in the shadows, her expression composed and unflinching as the avalanche's crescendo reached its peak. She didn’t look away when the snow settled into a deceptive silence, reinforcing her calm control over the scene.

Twelve minutes exactly.

A polite, efficient window of time, she noted. She smoothed the lapel of her jet-black cashmere peacoat, her expression as calm as a frozen lake. There was no exhilaration in her eyes, only the quiet, satisfied tally of the ledger being balanced. She turned back toward the wreckage and walked inside to begin the next phase of the evening.
