Maybe you're reading this while waiting in the school pickup line.
Maybe you're hiding in the bathroom for five minutes of peace and quiet.
Maybe there's a basket of laundry sitting next to you that should have been folded three days ago.
Or maybe the kids are finally in bed, the house is quiet, and for the first time all day, you have a moment to yourself.
However you got here, I'm glad you did.
Because if you're anything like most moms, you've spent years taking care of everyone else.
You make the appointments.
You remember the birthdays.
You pack the lunches.
You keep track of who needs to be where and when.
You somehow manage to keep the entire household moving forward.
And somewhere along the way, you started putting yourself at the bottom of the list.
Not because you wanted to.
Not because you don't care about your health.
But because life got busy.
Maybe you're tired of feeling tired.
Maybe you're frustrated because you know what you should be doing, but finding the time and energy to actually do it feels impossible.
Or maybe you're simply ready for something to change.
Whatever brought you here, I want you to know you're in good company.
I've been there too.
And that's exactly why I wrote this book. I wanted to touch base with the moms who are in the trenches. For moms living their lives day to day, holding on by a thread and hoping for the best.
The moms who are doing the best they can with the time, energy, and resources they have. The moms who want to feel stronger, healthier, and more confident, but aren't interested in turning their entire lives upside down to get there.
If that sounds like you, you're in the right place.
Whether you're doing this because you've been warned that your health needs a makeover, or because you feel like now is the time to take action and become stronger for yourself and your family, take a moment to acknowledge that this is a big first step.
I want you to know that I'm going to break all of this down and make it manageable, realistic, and completely doable, regardless of your reasons for starting today.
Before we begin, I want to take a moment to acknowledge what I know and what I don't know.
I know fitness. I know how to create workout programs that are effective, practical, and sustainable. I am an ACSM Certified Personal Trainer and a yoga teacher with more than 1,300 hours of yoga teacher training and certifications. For over 20 years, I've worked in the health and wellness industry helping people build healthier lifestyles through movement, fitness, and lasting habits.
What I am not is a doctor, psychologist, psychiatrist, registered dietitian, or other licensed healthcare professional. While I have extensive experience in fitness and wellness, the information in this book is intended for educational and informational purposes only.
Nothing in this book should be used to diagnose, treat, cure, or manage any disease, illness, injury, or medical condition. Likewise, the information provided is not intended to replace the advice, treatment, or recommendations of your physician or other qualified healthcare provider.
Because I genuinely care about your health and well-being, I encourage you to consult with your healthcare provider before beginning any exercise program or making significant changes to your current lifestyle, especially if you have existing health concerns, medical conditions, or physical limitations.
Your health journey is unique, and the safest approach is always one that takes your individual needs and circumstances into account. I want you to have success and use this information to help change your life so that you can be healthy, happy, and fully present in your everyday life.
Now that we've covered all of that, let's talk about some of the most common fitness myths I hear from moms and why understanding what fitness really means can completely change the way you approach your health and wellness journey.
Myth #1: "I Need to Go to a Gym to Get Fit"
Fact: The gym is only one way to become stronger and healthier, but it's not the only way.
In fact, many of my clients never even walk into a gym unless they truly want to. They work out from the comfort of their homes, neighborhoods, and local parks. We get creative and find innovative ways to use the material that they have available to help them reach their goals.
Myth #2: "I Need at Least an Hour for It to Be Worth It"
Fact: The truth is, you only need a few minutes a few times a day to get started.
The key is finding small pockets of time where you would normally be sitting. Maybe it's while scrolling social media during a work break. Maybe it's first thing in the morning while waiting for the kids to get on the bus. Or maybe it's after work while watching your favorite show.
All I'm saying is that the 60-minute "rule" we've been spoon-fed by the fitness industry is not the be-all and end-all. Reaching your goals is absolutely possible with small bursts of exercise throughout your day.
Myth #3: "I Need Fancy Equipment and Heavy Weights to Get a Good Workout"
Fact: Actually, if you have a few light- to medium-weight dumbbells, some resistance bands, a flight of stairs, a chair, or even a yoga ball, you already have everything you need to start your fitness journey.
Fancy equipment and heavy weights are not necessary.
Your body weighs something, too! I can tell you from experience that you can do a lot with your own body weight to get your heart rate up and your muscles working.
Myth #4: "My Kids Will Interrupt My Workout"
Fact: It's inevitable. The moment you find time to do something for yourself, your kids will want a snack, be thirsty, need the code for the TV, lose their electronic device, and beg you to help them find it.
They also might be genuinely curious about what you're doing and want to be part of it.
Here's what I've noticed—not just with my clients' kids, but with my own.
At first, you taking time for yourself will be something new and different. If your kids are older, it's up to you to set some boundaries.
"Mom is working out right now. I'll be happy to help you in the next 10 to 20 minutes when I'm finished."
With time and consistency, they'll realize that what you're doing is part of your normal routine.
Maybe they'll want to participate. Maybe they'll roll their eyes and walk away.
If they're little and need a snack or a drink, help them and then get back to your workout. I've had to pause plenty of sets because one of my kids needed something. I simply stop, help them, and then go right back to my workout.
It's important to realize that flexibility will be key to your success especially as a mom raising kids. Being rigid and hard on yourself for having to take intermittent breaks to be a mom is not going to make or break your success. So keep an open mind and go with the flow.
One Last Myth...
Because we have to get on with this so you can start getting fit!
Myth #5: "I Don't Have the Willpower to Stay Consistent. I Always Fall Off the Wagon."
Fact: Maybe it's true that you've fallen off the wagon a few times. Maybe it's happened every time.
But that doesn't mean you don't have what it takes to be successful this time.
The truth is, you simply haven't found a way to make getting healthy work for you.
What I've experienced personally, and what I've seen with the moms I work with, is that once you find an approach that fits your lifestyle, reaching your goals becomes much more achievable.
Success has very little to do with willpower, motivation, inspiration, or drive.
Instead, it has everything to do with finding something you enjoy and creating a routine that fits naturally into your life.
Now that you realize many of the common reasons moms give themselves for not working out are actually myths, let's move into the next big question my clients ask when we begin working together:
"How do I start?"
My answer is always the same:
Start Where You Are
Now that you know you don't need a ton of time, a special place, or fancy equipment, let's talk about what it really takes to get started.
It's important to realize that you do not have to be fit, have experience lifting weights, or have ever stepped foot inside a gym to begin your journey toward becoming strong and healthy.
There are no prerequisites and no tests you have to pass.
You simply show up as you are and move forward from there.
It's about having an open mind and being willing to push past the excuses and myths we discussed earlier. It's about understanding that if you get sidetracked, you simply dust yourself off and keep going.
There is no "falling off the wagon" here.
There is no starting over.
You simply pick up where you left off.
That may be the biggest mindset shift you'll make on this journey.
It's not about looking back.
It's about moving forward.
Here's What We'll Work on Together
Throughout this book, we're going to focus on building a stronger, healthier version of you—one step at a time.
Together, we'll explore what fitness really means and why it matters to you as a busy mom.
You'll learn how to structure your workouts so they fit naturally into your day instead of feeling like one more thing on your to-do list.
We'll discuss why strength training is so important for moms, especially as we age, so we can stay strong, prevent injuries, and continue showing up for ourselves and our families.
You'll learn how flexibility and mobility aren't limited to your workouts, but weave their way into everything you do throughout the day.
We'll cover simple, effective routines that you can do almost anywhere, at any time.
Finally, we'll discuss the power of consistency and how to maintain the habits you build so that you can not only achieve results, but keep them for a lifetime.
One Last Thing Before We Get Started
Remember that this process is personal.
What works for your best friend, sister-in-law, or boss might not work for you, and that's okay.
The fact that you picked up this book and chose this path is a sign that, whether you believe it or not, you're ready to begin this journey.
The moment you opened this book, you said YES.
Yes to yourself.
Yes to your health.
Yes to creating a lifestyle that allows you to participate fully in your life, be present with your family, and remain strong and healthy for years to come.
There will be moments of doubt. That much I can almost promise you.
But if you remember why you started, if you remember that all you committed to was taking the first step, not overhauling your entire life overnight, but simply moving forward one day at a time, everything else will begin to fall into place.
And with that, let's dive in. I am so excited to guide you on this journey
