Chapter 9

A Rougher Road Than Expected

One year had swiftly passed since Theresa's surgery, and the journey to recovery had proven to be more challenging than she ever anticipated. Adjusting to life with a stoma presented a whole new set of obstacles she had never imagined. Simple tasks that used to be second nature now required careful consideration. From navigating a new restroom routine to finding clothing that could discreetly conceal what she affectionately dubbed her "beast," every aspect of her daily life had been transformed.

One afternoon, Lola paid Theresa a visit. As Theresa greeted her at the door, tear stains on her cheeks revealed her inner turmoil. After settling down with a cup of coffee, Lola gently inquired, "Sweetie, what's troubling you? Please, talk to me."

Overwhelmed, Theresa confessed, "I feel like I've lost myself. I spend my days in house robes, neglecting my appearance. I feel utterly unattractive."

Lola reassured her, "You are far from hideous, my dear." Concerned, she then asked about Dale's whereabouts.

Theresa sighed, "He's probably at the South Side Tavern, unable to bear looking at me."

Lola's eyes flashed with anger. "Is this his idea of being a supportive husband? If so, it's pitiful."

With empathy in her eyes, Lola requested the use of Theresa's phone. As she dialed a number on the rotary phone, Theresa questioned, "Who are you calling?"

Lola smiled and responded, "I'm calling Rob at the Styling Barn, dear. It's time we do something with that hair of yours. And after, we'll grab lunch, followed by a shopping trip to find you something lovely and comfortable to wear."

Theresa looked at her in surprise, unsure of what to say. Lola, known for her straightforward nature, wasted no time and urged, "Come on now, time's ticking. Let's make the most of the day."

A spark of excitement lit up Theresa's eyes as she smiled and began to get ready promptly, eager for the day's adventures ahead.

After Rob had completed his work on Theresa, she made her way back to the reception area where Lola had been patiently waiting. Lola greeted her with a wide smile and exclaimed, "There's the gal we all know and love!"

Theresa responded with a gentle smile and proceeded to the desk to settle the bill. Much to her surprise, Rob insisted, "No payment needed—this one's on me. It's just great to see you feeling like your old self again."

Theresa was deeply touched by his gesture.

Lola then suggested they head to Cedar Rapids for lunch at Bishop's and later visit Younkers, confident they would find just what Theresa needed. Over a satisfying lunch accompanied by turtle pie and coffee, Theresa expressed her gratitude, saying, "I can't thank you enough. This is exactly what I needed."

Lola simply smiled and proposed they go shopping for new clothes next.

At the department store, Theresa spent an hour searching through various racks without success. Frustrated, she eventually sighed, "I give up. There's nothing here I can wear. Let's just go home."

Lola, however, refused to give up and suggested they seek assistance from a saleswoman. Reluctantly, Theresa agreed.

Approaching the saleswoman, Theresa described her preferences, hoping for a solution. The saleswoman beamed and assured them, "We have just what you need—follow me."

Encouraged by the prospect of finding suitable clothing, Theresa and Lola eagerly trailed behind the clerk. However, to Theresa’s dismay, the saleswoman led them straight to the maternity department.

Overcome with disappointment, Theresa’s heart sank, and tears welled up in her eyes. Distraught, she abruptly left the store, running outside. Concerned, Lola chased after her, managing to catch up and console her, determined to find a way to lift her spirits.

Theresa, visibly upset, sobbed, "She thought I was pregnant!" as tears streamed down her cheeks.

Lola intervened firmly, saying, "Stop this right now. These clothes may not be perfect, but we both know how to sew, and we don't give up that easily. Dry your eyes, go back in there, and find materials you like. We can fix anything else with some alterations."

Theresa hesitated, asking, "Are you sure?"

Lola reassured her, "I'm positive. I'm 5'1"—I alter everything I own. You're nearly six feet tall—everything looks elegant on you."

Returning to the store, they purchased a few items and spent the whole night sewing. When they finished, Lola told Theresa, "Go try this on."

Feeling insecure, Theresa went to her room and changed. Emerging in a silky floral-patterned blouse and dress slacks with a newly placed elastic waistband that draped beautifully on her, Lola looked up and exclaimed, "Wow."

Theresa replied, "Really?"

Lola affirmed, "Yes, really."

Overwhelmed with gratitude, Theresa gave her a tight hug and said, "I love you so much."
