Chapter 3

Making Arrangements

The drive to Pat's house felt like an eternity. With a torrent of thoughts and worries flooding her mind, it became overwhelming. Theresa pulled over to the shoulder of the two-lane highway, overcome by tears. She couldn't shake the image of her children's faces upon hearing the news of their mother's potential death. Wiping her tears, she gathered herself enough to continue to Pat's house.

Upon arrival, Pat was seated with her 2-year-old nephew J.D. on her knee. Theresa walked straight to J.D., embracing him tightly, and confided, "It's not good, not good at all."

Pat gently took J.D. and settled him in a playpen with toys before turning her attention back to Theresa. Inquiring about the doctor's prognosis, Theresa shared the grim news, breaking down in tears, admitting she couldn't face this alone.

Pat reassured her immediately, insisting, "Well, of course not." She promised to take care of the kids, emphasizing that Max's sports schedule, Daleann's schooling, and J.D.'s easygoing nature would make it manageable. With unwavering confidence, Pat assured her sister that everything would work out fine.
