Chapter 9

Oh, My Aching Knees

While moving and carrying boxes recently, I was unprepared for the sharp pain I felt in my knees. What happened? I realized I’d been carrying a lot of extra weight—not just in my hands, but on my body. Suddenly, everyday activities like climbing on and off a bus or train with a backpack or luggage became difficult and painful.

What Does Extra Weight Do to Your Knees?

Your knees are powerhouses. They are the largest and strongest joints in your body, bearing the brunt of your movements every day. It’s estimated that for every one pound of body weight, your knees experience three pounds of pressure with each step you take. Add an incline—like climbing stairs or hills—and that pressure increases even more.

Carrying an extra ten pounds might not sound like much, but it significantly impacts your knees. In fact, losing just a few pounds can dramatically reduce knee strain and protect your joints in the long term. Losing ten pounds results in thirty pounds less pressure per step on each knee.

Let’s put that into perspective:

  • If you walk 5,000 steps per day, carrying an extra ten pounds adds up to 150,000 pounds of pressure on your knees daily.
  • Multiply that by 365 days, and that extra weight generates a staggering 54,750,000 pounds of cumulative pressure on your knees in a year.

No wonder my knees were hurting.

When you consider common factors like past injuries or arthritis, the burden becomes even greater. Your joints simply weren’t designed to carry such excess load indefinitely.

Lighten Up to Lessen Joint Pain

The solution is clear: lighten the load. Even modest weight loss can significantly reduce joint stress, improve mobility, and decrease knee pain. You don’t need to focus on dramatic numbers—the smallest changes can make a major difference in joint health.

Start with mindful, sustainable steps:

  • Increase daily movement.
  • Focus on nutrient-rich, anti-inflammatory foods.
  • Stay hydrated.
  • Build muscle through strength training to support joint function.

Every pound lost is a gift to your knees—a gift they’ll repay with less pain, more strength, and greater mobility.
