Chapter 14

Aftertide

And so, there it is, my darling. Every delicious detail exactly as it unfolded. The absolute truth regarding the girl, the reality of the witch, and the miserable failure of the King.

Just as promised.

Now, I really must be swimming back. As the Queen of the Ocean, I have certain responsibilities. King Devan and myself are hosting a banquet for the visiting Pacificans. Oceanica is just as I remember it. Parties and dancing and singing and feasts. It really is all so grand, isn't it?

Oh, wait. I almost forgot. I had a reason for coming here. I promised to bring you this. I brought it all the way here to return it..

Although, I have been considering the gesture. You certainly can’t wear jewelry at this point. It would be an awful waste of something so exquisite. Perhaps it’s best then, that I hold onto the pendant… for safekeeping. Besides, the blue complements the red of my new scales far too perfectly to leave it lying about in the dirt. It does pull my entire look together flawlessly.

I do suppose it’s the thought that truly counts. So, thank you for the gift, dear sister. I will cherish it forever.

I’m so very glad we finally had this chance to talk, Carlotta. I’ve missed you terribly. It’s difficult to believe that I’m the only one left. So many thought that I would be the first to go.

I've lasted a lot longer than many thought I would. And I do look divine!
