Chapter 1 — Blind Spot

The security desk at Mason Towers runs twelve monitors. Earl watches all of them.

Tonight he is watching one.

The feed is dated October 13th, 2019. An elevator lobby, empty. A woman steps into frame, presses the call button. The doors open. She steps inside.

Earl leans forward. Just slightly.

The doors close. The timestamp ticks. 11:55 PM. The elevator does not move.

11:56 PM.

The doors open.

Empty.

Earl sits back. He reaches into his breast pocket and produces a small notebook — the same one he has carried for thirty years. He opens it to a page near the back. Not a fresh page. Already written. He reads it. Three words, before his thumb covers the rest.

THEY COME BACK.

He closes the notebook. Sets it flat on the desk. Then — slowly — he reaches into his breast pocket again and produces a small photograph. Worn at the edges. He sets it beside the notebook without looking at it.

He already knows what's in it.

He reaches forward and switches the feed.

A different elevator. Same building. Tonight.

Two people. Riding down.

The floor display reads 12.

Maya has been talking for two floors and she is not slowing down. She white-knuckles her phone, the screen showing a dating profile — no photo, no last name, just a username and the message: trust me, you'll know me when you see me. The man leaning against the rail across from her is watching her with the patient amusement of someone who knows exactly how this is going to end.

His name is Rashad. She doesn't know that yet.

"Okay," Maya says, "be honest. Is it insane to meet a guy who won't even send a photo?"

"Define insane."

"No picture. No last name. Just trust me, you'll know me when you see me." She waves the phone at no one in particular. "Who says that?"

"A confident man," Rashad says. "Or a serial killer."

"You're not helping."

Display: 9.

"What if he's just bad at selfies?"

"What if I get down there and he's forty-five, with a ponytail, bad breath and goes by Wolf?"

Rashad considers this seriously. "Then you order the most expensive thing on the menu and leave."

Maya laughs despite herself. "See, that's actually good advice."

Display: 6.

"God, I'm so nervous." She smooths her jacket. "Is my hair okay?"

"Your hair's perfect."

"You don't even know what we're—"

"It's perfect."

Display: 3.

Maya leans against the wall. "Whatever. Worst case, I never see him again and you're the only nice man in this whole building."

Rashad smiles. "That would be a shame."

Display: L.

The doors part. Maya steps out into the lobby, takes a breath, turns around to say something — and Rashad holds up his phone. Her own dating profile, glowing on the screen. Photo, name, everything.

"Table's under Maya," he says. "I figured the elevator beat the lobby for a first impression."

She freezes.

Then — slowly — a smile breaks across her face that she cannot stop and does not try to.

"You let me say the ponytail thing."

"You said you'd know me when you saw me."

She laughs. He steps out beside her. The elevator doors close behind them.

Twelve floors. One match.

On the security monitor, Earl watches Maya and Rashad walk out of frame together, still laughing.

He does not smile.

He reaches forward and switches the feed. Back to the other camera — the 2019 one. The empty elevator. The timestamp frozen at 11:56 PM.

The photograph sits face-down on the desk beside the notebook. He does not turn it over.

He doesn't need to.

He turns off the monitor.

The room goes dark except for the other eleven feeds. Twelve little squares of light. The building, breathing around him.

Earl does not move.

Some doors were never meant to open.
