The room fell silent.
Luke looked from face to face.
Sheriff Patterson.
Whiskey Jack.
Sarah.
Virgil Crowe.
Every one of them avoided his eyes.
That told him everything. The man they were talking about…
It was someone they all knew. Someone they had watched grow from a frightened little boy into a grown man.
Luke listened.
"He made me promise two things."
"What?"
"First...that Thomas Bell would receive justice if justice could ever be found."
"And the second?"
The sheriff smiled sadly. "That William's little boy would never pay for his father's sins."
Luke closed his eyes. That sounded exactly like his father.
Sam hadn't been protecting a killer. He'd been protecting a child.
Sheriff Patterson reached into his desk drawer.
"There is one last thing."
He removed an old manila envelope.
The paper had yellowed with age.
Across the front were Sam McCall's unmistakable block letters.
To be opened only after the truth is known.
Luke smiled despite himself. "My father certainly liked envelopes."
A faint chuckle moved around the room.
For just a moment... the heaviness lifted.
It sounded exactly like something Sam would do.
Luke opened it.
Inside was a single folded page. He began to read.
Luke,
By now you know about William.
You know about Thomas.
And you know why I stayed silent.
There is one more thing you need to know.
The little boy grew into a good man.
Better than his father ever believed he could become.
If you are tempted to judge him...don't.
Judge William if you must.
Judge me if you must.
But leave the son to live the life his father wanted for him.
He has earned it.
Love,
Dad
Luke folded the letter carefully.
His father's words carried no bitterness. Only compassion. Only hope.
Doc Harlan Whitaker burst into the room, soaked from the rain. He was breathing hard. His hat was gone. Mud streaked his trousers.
"Luke!" he shouted. "They've taken Elizabeth!"
The room exploded into motion.
Luke was already on his feet. "What?"
Doc struggled to catch his breath. "Three men." "They forced her into a truck." "Headed toward Cypress Hollow."
Virgil Crowe's face turned ashen. "No..."
Sheriff Patterson reached for his revolver. "Who?"
Doc looked directly at Crowe. "Not your men."
Crowe whispered, "I know."
Luke stared. "You do?"
Crowe's expression became one of genuine fear. "There's someone we forgot."
The room went still.
Crowe looked toward the window. Toward the river. Toward the gathering storm. Then he spoke the one name no one had mentioned in years.
"Walter Garrison."
Whiskey Jack's eyes widened. "He's alive?"
Crowe nodded. "And if Walter has Elizabeth..."His voice faltered "...then he isn't after the ledger."
Luke frowned. "Then what does he want?"
Crowe looked at him with haunted eyes. "He wants revenge."
The wind rattled the courthouse windows. Somewhere in the distance, thunder rolled across the Delta.
Luke tucked Jacob's ledger beneath his arm. His father's pocket watch went into his coat.
Sheriff Patterson checked the cylinder of his revolver.
Whiskey Jack picked up an old shotgun from the corner.
Virgil Crowe stood silently.
For the first time in twenty years...The men of Belle Rive were no longer divided by old secrets. They were united by one purpose.
Bring Elizabeth home.
