Chapter 15

A Candle for Rhiida

Rhiida lit a candle, the room now having enough light for someone not to hit their head on the wall.

"What even is this place?" Rhiida asked, looking at Chad who was already relaxed on the dining table.

"Just a small house," he replied. She frowned. "If you had all this, then why did you come knocking on my door?"

"I don't like staying alone."

Her anger almost took over, but she quickly took a deep breath, turning back to the candle.

"At least your stupidity came with a benefit."

Chad got up, a grin on his face. "Now, Miss Witch, are you ready to cure your victim?"

Chad walked closer, placing a hand on her shoulder. "It's the first step to a fresh start."

Rhiida looked at Liam's body, a sigh escaping her lips. She walked to where he lay, crouching next to him, as she placed a hand on his forehead.

A purple liquid flowed upwards in her arms continuously until she finally removed her hands from Liam's forehead.

"There, he's free from my bondage." Chad gave a small round of applause, moving to inspect the body; all injuries were now gone.

The only thing left was for him to wake up.

"You brought me all the way here," Rhiida suddenly said. "I know you have something planned out."

Chad nodded. "But first you'll need to meet my family."

"You do not deserve my hand in marriage."

Chad shook his head. "That's not what I mean."

He moved away from Liam. "I left this town a while ago; now I'm back. I would like to see my family once again."

"How does that concern me seeing them?"

He moved closer. "You'll stick with me, won't you?" Rhiida looked at him for a second before diverting her attention back to the candles.

"It's funny how you sincerely believe your fantasies." Rhiida smiled slightly, watching as the candle slowly melted.

Being a witch, is it fun?", Chad asked, wanting to ignite a new conversation.

He liked talking to her.

"No", she said. "But it's interesting".

"Interesting?"

She turned to him, her hair flipping and lightly hitting his face. "My sister took a lump of my flesh at night and ate it as her way of committing suicide."

Chad wasn't as shocked as she thought he would be, if anything, he was calm "Do you know a lot about witches?" she asked him.

"Did your sister survive?"

She placed her palm on her jaw. "My body contains loads of poison inside it, the kind you can't be immune to unless you're me."

He nodded. "I guessed that."

She folded her arms. "You haven't answered the other question."

He shrugged. "I try my best to understand witches. They're a cute species."

He moved back. "I'm kidding, please don't kill me."

She scoffed. "Stop acting like I'm stronger than you. You almost eliminated me in our fight."

Chad scratched his head. "I only wanted to block your attacks, but you got so violent, I had to try something new."

She shook her head. "So you're one of the cowardly men who hit women."

He smiled, waving his finger in disapproval. "Correction: Self-defence."

Rhiida stuffed her hands in her pockets, heading to the door that belonged to one of the three rooms there. "Will there be light in the morning?" she asked.

Chad looked at the candles. "The power is on now, I just turned off the switch. I don't even know why you kept these candles."

Her movement froze as she turned sharply to him. "You told me the lights were out," she said.

"Because I turned them off."

She let go of the door handle. "Why would you say it like that?"

"That's how it should be said."

"No, that's just your stupidity taking over!"

Chad walked closer. "Then you should have tried turning on the light switch."

"Well forgive me for trusting what you said about your own house." She opened the door, walking into the room as she slammed it immediately.

Chad walked back, sighing. He was hungry and not in the mood for arguments.

"Don't you want to eat something?" he sneered from where he was, a loud 'NO' in response.

He heard a chair creak, his head turning to the right as he saw Liam, who now sat up, confused.

He rubbed his head. "Where am I?"

Chad bolted to his side, grabbing him into a hug. "Dude, I thought you would never wake up."

Liam pulled away from the hug. "Chad, what are you doing here? There was a woman—wait, how are you here?"

Chad smiled, pulling a chair closer to sit. "I saved you from the consequences of your father's sins."

"What?"

Liam traced back to the moment she stabbed him; she had mentioned his father's name.

"How am I alive?" he asked.

Chad placed a hand on his shoulder. "Relax, the knife was fake, but she did infuse you with poison. Though I've taken care of that."

Liam looked at himself. He felt energised, better than most days, honestly.

"I hope you're right," he said, eyes on himself. Then he turned to Chad, who had a small smile.

"What are you doing here, though?" Chad giggled. "I came to see my precious family, and you were so lucky—the first person I chose to bother was your killer."

"Seriously?"

Chad nodded. "Seriously."

Liam grabbed him and pulled him into a tight hug. Chad felt tears falling on his shirt. "Sorry, I just thought I would die without ever doing what I've delayed for years."

Chad chuckled, giving him small pats on the back. "We've all been there, haven't we?"

Liam pulled back slightly. "I owe you one."

Chad grinned. "Let's make it two."

The door to Rhiida's room creaked open slightly. "What sort of idiot doesn't have soap in his—"

Her eyes flicked to Liam, and her words stopped immediately. "He's awake so fast?!!"

Chad shook his head. "Did you think he was some weak guy?"

"Don't put words in my mouth."

Liam gently tapped Chad. "Please, who is she?"

Chad looked at him, surprised. "Don't you know thy who stabbed you?"

Liam stared at her. "The woman who stabbed me was in a coat; the hoodie covered her face."

"Well," Chad pointed out. "That's her right there."

"Why is she here?!" Liam sharply turned to Chad.

"She thought you were your father. She's apologetic now."

"And?" Liam pressed. "Did you marry her or something? Why did you decide to bring her along?"

"So she can find a new purpose."

Rhiida stepped closer to Liam, her expression unreadable.

Then she knelt down.
