Chapter 4

Do Not Call The Bethrothed A Maid

A knock snapped me out of my thoughts, my body remembering how to move.

"Come in," I said instinctively, I couldn't remember a time when my replies weren't the same.

Aaron stood at the door, his expression as strict as always. Briel stood behind him, her face no longer filled with joy, rather worry.

"Is something wrong?"I asked, removing my hands from the window, forgetting about my cursed life for a second.

"There's something we need to discuss, we can say it here or in the living room," Aaron said, a hand on Briel's hair, patting her gently.

"If the room is possible..."I looked around me, clean, simple. "This room should be

Aaron closed the door behind him, guiding Briel towards my bed so she could sit down as he remained next to her.

"Your previous owners are frustrated," Aaron started. "This is not what they sent you to Marin to do."

"My previous owners?"I thought, Was it Mr John or the people I actually conssidered my owners.

Aaron cleared his throat, "Corinth seemed to have misinformed us by mistak. Itt was not his fault, though. He must have believed he heard him wrong and went what he considered possible.".

"I don't understand," I added. "What exactly did my owners have planned out for me?"

Briel finally looked up, grabbing Aaron's clothes, indicating she wanted to speak too.

She looked up at me, her kind eyes replaced with something temporary, I hoped.

"Betrothed", She said. "You are meant to get married and not serve as a slave in a noble household."

I stammered back, looking into her eyes for a deeper explanation, yet she provided none bending her head low once more.

I looked at Aaron, his hand already on his forehead, "Could you please explain, Sir, I-"

"You were betrothed to one of the fine young men in this city, but we were misinformed that we were to take you as a maid. We were meant to prepare for your husband. "

My eyes diverted to the window, a strong feeling asking me to jump out. It was too much, way too much.

"I can't get married," I blurted out, unplanned, Wasn't I the girl who said anything else was better than this. Was I rejecting my everything else?

"Please bear with us," Briel muffled, "We're deeply sorry about everything that is going on. You'll be happy wherever you go, I'm sure, my love. "

Aaron placed a hand on her shoulder, "Slow down, Briel. Let her process this for a second. "

The room was silent, a state I hoped it would be in forever, but I was the one they were waiting on, so I had to speak.

"Are you sure?, I mean why would a newly wed couple be told to prepare a girl for marriage?"

"My family," Briel replied. "They have this tradition where boys and girls are trained for marriage once they turn 21 for a year. They hoped I could teach you this. "

I rubbed my head, "This is too much, I-

"It's not too much."

I and Briel I turned to Aaron, his eyes locked on mine. "The things that will be too much have not begun. Don't tell yourself this is much."

Briel got up, "How can you say that, Darling? She's just 19! What does she know about marriage to suddenly be forced into it?"

Aaron tilted his head, "I'm only letting her know, I didn't mean any harm."

Briel grabbed my hands, "Don't be scared, my love, I'm here, I'll always be here."

Aaron grabbed the door handle, "You'll be taken to a man named Korel a day from now. Don't let Briel deceive you. We can't do anything about it."

"Aaron!"Briel screamed, following behind him as he left the room.

The atmosphere changed after that. The house no longer gave me that warm feeling that this was home. The pleasant thought of spending the most of my life here.

I remained on my bed for hours, Korel, I knew the name well. It was a common name in Mari. It wasn't anything someone important would likely name their child.

I walked towards the window, the one next to my bed, the same window that had basically paralyzed me.

I looked toward the window slowly, checking to see if they were still there. Luckily enough, they weren't.

I took in a sigh of relief, I didn't need anything more on my head, I hadn't figured out how to break the curse of Uranus, and I was getting married already.

"I'll beg," I thought, there was no other option. "Even if I have to go down on my hands and knees."

I placed my hand on the window, "Either that or....

I shook my head, clearing the daring thoughts that crossed my mind.

Another knock came on the door, this one more rough than the last. I opened the door myself thsi time, the open door revealing Aaron.

"I want to talk to you."

I moved to the side, allowing him to come in, as he adjusted his glasses again, his hands seemed to always be on them.

He leaned on the wall, "I'm not here to talk much, I just don't want this news to cause an argument between I and Briel?"

"Are you two arguing?"I asked, confused. I hadn't heard any noise.

"We're on different sides of the matter, Briel thinks we should keep trying to convince your owners, but I know that is impossible. I don't want it to bring a problem. "

"What should I do?"

"Talk", He said. "I don't care what your opinion is. Just express it. Be it Briel's, mine, or something entirely different, tell us what you think. "

He took a deep breath, closing his eyes as he spoke, "I love Briel and wouldn't want a problem to arise between us. Help me out, Genessa. "

I remained silent, nodding to his words, Aaron didn't seem like someone who showed his affections through words, it seems I had pushed him too.

"Can I ask a question, too?"I requested.

He turned to me, "If it's about your husband, just know he's the son of the 5th guardian.
